Event: Raising Awareness - New Animal Welfare Act / Vaccination Against Rabies / School Events / Presentations
Hosted by: Ministry of Livestock Development/TSPCA/Dar Animal Haven

Tanzania observed at National Level the World Animal Day this year in Dar-es-Salaam under the auspices of leading Animal Welfare advocacy groups like World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) Africa Region Office, Roots and Shoots, Dar Animal Haven, Tanzania Animal Protection Organization (TAPO) and Tanzania Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TSPCA). The government, through the Ministry of Livestock Development, blessed the celebrations as one of the strategies for raising public awareness on Animal Welfare in the country when the country is drafting a much wider legislation in Animal Welfare-The Animal Welfare Act.

The celebrations were a success because of good advance preparations through an organizing committee that drew members from WSPA Africa Region Office, Roots and Shoots, Dar Animal Haven, TSPCA and the Ministry of Livestock Development. Committee sittings started well in early September 07 and were well attended. Three sub committees were formed one on Publicity another one on Schools participation coordination and a third one on Animal vaccination (treatment camps).

On the 4th of October the World Animal Day was observed in Dar-es-Salaam as follows:

All participants (TSPCA, Dar Animal Haven and 10 primary schools and 10 secondary schools / 20 children from each Roots and Shoots club at each school) marched from St. Joseph Cathedral to the national Museum grounds where official opening was carried out. The guest of honour was the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Livestock Development who was represented by Dr. Mohammed M Bahari the Director for Livestock Identification, Registration and Traceability. The crowd was entertained by Roots and Shoots club from St. Mary’s secondary school who performed a created play “Woes from the jungle” and Mianzini primary school who performed an animal song (see photo).

Friday 5th of October – Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania with Mlimani primary school carried out bird watching at the University of Dar es Salaam campus. Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of October – Dar Animal Haven organized for Animal Vaccination in treatment camps. Location: Democratic Republic of the Congo - Goma
Event: Let's Celebrate World Animal Day
Hosted by: Safe Environment Enhanced for All (S.E.A.)

Against all odds, we managed to overcome the many difficulties facing us in the weeks leading up to World Animal Day and celebrations went ahead with the support and presence of many dignitaries and VIPs including the Mayor of Goma, the Game Rangers Regional Director, UN Peacekeepers, Virunga National Park Conservator, government officials, AIPEPROS Environmental Protection Coordinator, church amd scout association representatives. The celebrations took place in Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province in the Dem. Rep. of Congo (on the Rwanda border). In this area of unrest full of armed groups the animals are suffering dreadfully. When all hell breaks loose and heavy weapons are in action they don't know which way to go. As a reminder, since Sept. 3rd 2007: Jomba, Bikenge and Bukima are under the militia control of General Laurenet Nkunda. Game rangers have been chased away from three patrols stations where there are gamekeepers monitoring the movements of endangered mountain gorillas.

For these reasons it was really very important for us to use the opportunity of World Animal Day to mingle with other animal lovers and renew our focus to ensure the best possible results for the benefit of the animals.

The children watched a film entitled "We Think of the World of the Animals" that we are sure will have an impact on their behaviour towards animals. After the film there was a presentation followed by a discussion and questions to raise awarenesss of animal welfare issues . Many people attended the event and VIP guests also took part in the celebrations that were introduced by short a prayer of Evangeliste Elie Kamavu. The day ended with VIP guests being invited for refreshments at the Bird Hotel. We thank our guests and all those who helped make this day a success. Paul Lughembe, S.E.A. (Safe Environment for All). Location: Kenya, Mombasa
Event: Shaggy Dog Show and Other Tales!
Hosted by: Kenya Society for the Protection & Care of Animals (KSPCA)

Sunday 7th October saw the welcome return of the KSPCA’s ‘Shaggy Dog Show’ at the Bamburi Nature Trail, after an absence of two years.  This terrific event was a great success and raised much needed funds to help with the ongoing expenses that the KSPCA incur on a daily basis to help keep Mombasa free of hoards of lost, strayed, abused and neglected dogs and cats.

This year the seven classes were judged by Peter and Lindsey Nicholls, international dog show judges who specialise in Great Danes, and it was Peter who came up with the ingenious idea of raising extra funds by ‘auctioning’ the dogs in the People’s Choice class. The idea being that whichever dog raised the most money won the class and in this case it was Lucky, a three legged very lucky mutt who has landed on all three paws after being re-homed in a loving family after a horrendous road accident and having his leg chopped off with a panga.

The six other classes were very well supported and there was something for everyone: Fancy Dress; Best Puppy; Shaggiest Dog; Most Beautiful Eyes; Best KSPCA dog; and, Wounded Soldier. A special mention going to the hottest dog around. Hans Feuth who didn’t appear to have a dog with him at all but managed a big round of applause with his excellent impersonation!!

The Reef Hotel chefs catered the event free of charge and supplied scrumptious food which was very much appreciated by everyone who tasted the many delicacies on offer. The bread and other delicious goodies were kindly provided by “Golden Crust”, the bakery at Ratna Square and some of the meat was donated by the butchery at Mkomani.

'Midnight Express’ music kept the proceedings lively and everyone enjoyed the show-stopping repertoire from Marc van der Bilt and his singer. We cannot forget to thank Lafarge Ecosystem, who offered us the venue for free and specially Patricia who helped us with preparations for the event.
Also a big thank goes to Forster Andanje from the coca cola company who provided us with tables and chairs and gave us sodas for our bar.

The raffle prizes were outstanding proving, yet again, that the corporate sector of Mombasa is amazingly generous with the star prizes being fabulous weekend breaks for two. The KSPCA would like to give a special mention to all the volunteers and supporters who give tirelessly of their time, money and energy and, in particular, Marlen Enz without whom the show would not have happened. Location: Cameroon, Bamenda
Event: Fundraising Gala Evening/School & Community Talks/Animal Blessing
Hosted by: Foundation for Animal Welfare Cameroon (FAWCAM)

The celebration of World Animal Day in Cameroon started on the 28 September gaining publicity on the radio, TV and in three newspapers. On World Animal Day itself, we had a Tea Time Party with school pupils and students at the catholic school Alaakuma Mankon to raise funds and gave a brief talk on the bond that exists between humans and animals. We also had a Gala evening to pay tribute to the animal kingdom. The Gala evening was highly attended by the administration, politicians and the elite of the Bamenda municipality. Highlights of the evening included the cutting of the World Animal Day Cake and an auction sale of items donated by sponsors.

There was a Holy Mass at the Catholic Church Alaakuma presided by Rev. Father Sergio, our Parish Priest, asking God to bless all the animals of Cameroon and throughout the world. Lectures on animal welfare issues were presented at colleges in Bamenda. We were very happy with the contribution made by the staff of the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries. We are especially grateful to the Department of Animal Health and Sanitory Protection who assisted us in conducting lectures in colleges and to the community of Bamenda to teach about responsible pet ownership during which we distributed 1,200 leaflets on animal care. We also

The celebration of World Animal Day was very successful and the impact of FAWCAM on Cameroonian pet owners in particular has increased. Full report supplied by Ben Fru Wara, Executive President, FAWCAM, and edited by World Animal Day.

Location: Democratic Republic of Congo - Kasugho, Butembo & Goma
Event: Save the Animals
Hosted by: Tayna Center for Conservation/UGADEC/Tayna Gorilla Reserve

In Butembo City more than 100 people, mostly students from Tayna Center for Conservation Biology (TCCB) walked for about 90 minutes. After the walk they attended a talk about 'Wild Animal Conservation' with special reference to the Community Gorilla reserve and the Union of Gorilla Conservation.

At Kasugho: more than 400 students and the Tayna Gorilla Friends Club (Club des Amis des Gorilles de Tayna) did a long walk with calicos showing the importance of the nature conservation. Also a conference was held “Protecting Animals in Regions of Unrest". Case of the North Kivu region: "Deal and Challenge”.

In Goma: after a walk, a conference was held to discuss the topic of “Protecting the animals while rebels are killing Gorillas in Virunga National Park”. In Bukavu, graduates from TCCB organised a conference themed “Do we need to wait for Government to address the issue of nature conservation or should we all get involved?” All conferences attracted a large number of delegates.

In Goma and Butembo the sum of $3640 was spent to hire conference rooms, plus refreshments and transport. If any kind person can help us meet these costs we would be extremely grateful.
The message was so strong that we now see people treating animals with the respect they deserve. We are now working very hard so that we continue this programme. The real challenge is the lack of support or funds to continue our conservation efforts in this difficult region with people who fight against the government. If you would like to help the these organisations, please contact World Animal Day and we'll put you in touch with Pierre Kakule.

Location: South Africa
Event: Workplace Fun and Games!
Hosted by: Internet Solutions

Entry incomplete. We managed to collect a lot of money for our charity, the Randburg SPCA, and had a great time with two representatives coming out to our company and telling us about the work they do.  The Randburg SPCA focusses on cases of animal cruelty, and are involved in court cases relating to animal abuse.  It's a challenging position to be in, and unfortunately funds are always a problem.  We're not sure how much money we managed to collect, we're still awaiting confirmation, but it was a couple thousand - just one thousand South African Rands keeps one animal fed, housed and protected at their facility for an entire year, so we're looking forward to hearing how many animals we'll be sponsoring!
