Spayathon
SOUTH AFRICA - Cape Town - Noordhoek, Masiphumelele, Mountain View, Redhill, De Gama Park and Ocean View TEARS (The Emma Animal Rescue Society) On the fourth of October, TEARS in Noordhoek is holding a SPAYATHON. This means that the communites surrounding Noordhoek, they include Masiphumelele, Mountain View, Redhill,Da Gama Park and Ocean View, will be able to sterilize their animal FOR FREE! The objectives with this campaign are then following: To create awareness of TEARS IN Cape Town, To promote and sustain healthy animals, To promote the ethical treatment of animals and to prevent the spread of diseases and over population in domestic animals! This day coincides perfectly with WORLD ANIMAL DAY! TEARS is a pro life organization that rescues from abuse, neglect and suffering. TEARS provides a home for the dogs and cats before they find a permanent residence! They get walked, receive treats and all get given a name! Their holding pens (which are big) contain a basket and blanket! A brief about their personalities (likes, dislikes) is attached outside their pen! TEARS believes in leading by example, so our mobile clinics will pick up the owners and the animals in the above mentioned areas and take them to TEARS for their free sterilization, and post operation and post recovery they are taken back to their pick up point. The owners upon registration will also receive free dog food! All of this is to prevent the suffering of animals! Like Jeremy Bentham, the English philosopher said: "The question is not, can they reason? Nor can they talk? But, can they suffer? Leigh-Anne, TEARS. Email: leigh@tears.org.za Website: tears.org.za

We have written to the governmental authorities responsible for the poisoning of stray cats and dogs in Egypt asking them to not poison any animals on World Animal Day - we might only be stopping the massacre for one day but it's a small step in the right direction! We are also calling for slaughterhouses to be closed for a day. In addition, a private veterinary clinic has agreed to donate 5% of their profits on WAD to help fund SPARE projects and many vets will be displaying WAD posters at their clinics. Some vets will be offering spay/neuter operations at a reduced cost. We are also printing posters with this slogan written in Arabic: "Animals Have Rights Too!" Amina Abaza, President, SPARE.

Outreach Clinic
SOUTH AFRICA - Howick, Kwa Zulu Natal uMngeni SPCA I am delighted to announce that the uMngeni SPCA have decided to run an outreach clinic in Mafakathini, an underprivileged rural area, on the 4th October. On that day we will be dipping what we call “township” dogs against ticks, de-worming, vaccinating and sterilizing. At the same time we will take the opportunity of educating their owners who generally value their dogs but are economically poor, unsophisticated and largely unaware of the benefits to them and their animals of kindness and compassion. We have run many such clinics before and can usually expect anything up to 150 dogs. The people walk miles to bring their animals to our clinics and they very much appreciate the help we offer them. The benefits to their dogs can be clearly seen on routine follow-up visits and this outreach work extends to all their other animals. Yours Heather Somerville, uMngeni SPCA.

Awareness Campaign
SOUTH AFRICA - Cape Town Winelands SPCA Winelands SPCA is a small society in a rural area, in the mountains east of Cape Town. We will certainly promote World Animal Day. 4th October coincides with our spring agricultural show, where we always have a primarily educational stand. The focus of our stand this year will be on chaining of dogs, which, despite our best efforts, is sadly very prevalent here. We also have a weekly stand at the local produce market, so 4th October will be promoted there too. Customers at the weekly market are mainly animal lovers themselves, so here our focus will be on raising funds to help us fight the scourge of chaining, and involving the children through games at the market. We hide “abused” toy animals amongst the stall holders, and for a bit of pocket money, the kids have to find and rescue them! Further information about our work is on our website: www.spcawinelands.org.za
