Awareness Campaign
SLOVAKIA - Zvolen Pes v nudzi (Dogs in emergency) We are an NGO in Slovakia and we support and help dogs abandoned or abused by people. Our main objective is to establish a dog shelter near Zvolen (central Slovakia), where dogs can be placed until we find them a new 'forever' home. At present there isn't an animal shelter in this area. They need our help, because we are their only hope. In order to raise awareness of World Animal Day, we've placed the logo on our homepage www.pesvnudzi.info and tomorrow we are organising a World Animal Day event in the shopping center in Banská Bystrica where we will raise awareness of our work and animal welfare issues in general. Saturday is a very busy day at the shopping centre so a lot of people will learn that it's World Animal Day. Regards Kristina Mojzisova. Email: pesvnudzi@gmail.com

HOLLAND - The Hague Foundation ActieZwerfhonden Join our peaceful protest outside the Turkish Embassy at 3.00pm on 4th October. Foundation ActieZwerfhonden will be holding a peaceful demonstration outside the Turkish Embassy, Jan Evertstraat 15, The Hague, to highlight the abuse of stray dogs in Turkey. Please join us on 4th October, World Animal Day, to show the Turkish authorities that such cruelty is totally unacceptable and must be stopped. Peaceful demonstrations are also being organised in other major cities throughout the world and to create a greater impact they will take place simultaneously. Other participating countries are Turkey (Istanbul), Canada (Toronto & Vancouver), USA (Los Angeles & New York), Switzerland (Geneva), England (London), France (Paris), and Germany (Marburg). In several southern European countries the street image is fixed by the countless stray dogs. Especially when the tourist season is over, these dogs are poisoned or killed in another inhumane manner. Turkey is known as one of the worst offenders of animal rights in the world. Image not for publication without permission. Animal Blessing Mass
AUSTRIA - Linz St Peter's Roman Catholic Church As in previous years, our traditional Animal Blessing Mass will take place in our parish on the closest Sunday to World Animal Day. This year it will be on the 5th of October commencing at 9:30 am. Every year we receive telephone calls and emails from disappointed people who are unable to attend the animal blessing with their pet for reasons such as living too far away, health problems etc. Last year, a pet owner from Germany sent us a picture of his dog with the request for his pet to be blessed during the mass. This gave us a new idea for 2008 - if pet owners are unable to attend the service we invite them to send us a picture of their "animal friend" and tell us the name of their pet (via post or email). We will display the photographs and include them in our blessing enabling them to take part in our celebration from afar, on the intercession of Saint Frances of Assissi, the patron saint of animals. And so for the first time a world-wide participation will be possible. Please tell other pet owners about this possibility, so that as many animal lovers as possible can get involved. Greetings from Franz Zeiger, Pfarrer (Pastor) St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Tungassingerstraße 23a, 4020 Linz, Austria. This information is also available at http://www.linztermine.at/detail.asp?id=65910&cat=0&subcat=0&lang=de

Afterwards, we shall send photos of the pupils and their comments for publication in the overview of World Animal Day events 2008.
