Event: Adoption Day & Cat Spay Special
Hosted by: Trinidad & Tobago SPCA (TTSPCA)

As part of World Animal Day, the TTSPCA celebrated in two ways.

The TTSPCA is a shelter that houses approx. 25 cats and 75 dogs on a regular basis. We decided to team up with “Pedigree” as part of their international initiative for shelter animals and host an Adoption Day. Weeks prior to the adoption day we informed the public with both newspaper and radio ads. The adoption day was held at the Northern Branch shelter and, due to the intensive advertising (which was completely sponsored by Pedigree), we had an overwhelming amount of people that turned up on the day looking for a new pet. The tally at the end of the day was 100% adoption for our dogs, and 6 cats that were also placed! All of the dogs were spayed/neutered before leaving the shelter for their permanent home (we should also mention that before ANY dog is placed a ‘home-check’ is done to ensure that the animal goes to a secure home, this is done with volunteers going to the potential adopters home and verifying that the home is a good one, hopefully reducing the rate of returns due to unsuitable placement).

The second way that we celebrated World Animal Day was to hold a “Cat Spay Special”. In Trinidad, cats are often left to breed un-checked; this leads to huge numbers of feral cats running wild in areas. To stop the problem of roaming/stray cats, people often use rat or garden poison in meat; the cats then consume the tainted food causing them to suffer terrible deaths. We decided that by encouraging the public to spay/neuter their own cats, this would help reduce the number of unwanted litter born and sometimes thrown away, and; hopefully in a small way reduce the amount of poisoning deaths in cats. The TTSPCA – Northern Branch, offered a $25 US spay special for one week (the response was so great we extended this to 2 weeks) at our “low cost spay/neuter clinic”. It was a huge success with an average of 5 operations per day (which for us was great, because cats are considered by some people in our country as a pest, and the adoption rate/vet care rate is very low in Trinidad). We have since decided that we will make this particular event an annual practice. Fletch Persad, TTSPCA - North Branch, Christopher Samuel Drive, Mucurapo Road, St. James, Trinidad & Tobago.

Location: VENEZUELA - Maracay
Event: Marcha Mundial por los Animales en Maracay
Hosted by: AnimaNaturalis

Hosted by: AnimaNaturalis

Event: March Against Cruelty to Animals
Organised by: Yadira Pintor

Location: BAHAMAS - Lyford Cay / Freeport
Event: Animal Blessing Services x 2
Hosted by: St Christoper's Church / Garden of the Groves /

St. Christopher’s Church in Lyford Cay was packed full in the afternoon of Sunday October 4th, as Archdeacon Keith Cartwright preached to the animals and their owners in celebration of St. Francis of Assisi day. Close to 50 animals packed into the small white church. There were fish, hamsters, cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and a fresh water turtle (Terrapin). They all behaved amazingly well, noted Bahamas Humane President Kim Aranha…whilst the congregation sang “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small” they (the animals in church) all sat peacefully as if they knew that they were in the presence of God. Kim Aranha told us that she is so grateful to Archdeacon Cartwright for holding this service yearly. “The first one was three years ago and six animals were present, now the word is going around and people are come from as far as Fox Hill to have their beloved pets blessed”.  “It really makes me feel good,” Kim Aranha added “because we have to deal with so much cruelty and sadness at the Bahamas Humane Society on a regular basis that it is a good feeling to see happy and healthy animals who are well cared for and loved”. Archdeacon Cartwright is a keen animal lover and is on the board of the Bahamas Humane Society himself. Archdeacon Cartwright said, "we are delighted how many people came out to worship with us, the church was full and the animals were very peaceful”.

Kim Aranha said: Last year, I believe, that we were the only church in the nation to hold A Blessing of the Animals, this year we are joined by Father Cooper in Freeport who is doing a Blessing in the Garden of the Groves organized by the Grand Bahama Humane Society. Hopefully next year one or two other churches will follow our lead and honour God’s creature". Kim Aranha, President of the Bahamas Humane Society.

Location: BOLIVIA - Cochabamba
Event: Film screenings / Animal Welfare Debate / 'Festive Day' Celebration, Vegetarian Food Kermess
Hosted by: ADDA-Bolivia

World Animal day puts to the test the conscience level and organizational capacity of animal protection organizations, both national and international, to highlight the poor animal welfare standards today in Bolivia.

While a source of inspiration to many, the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights, marches and other events are taking place, to proclaim the existence of those Rights.

Fortunately, the constitutional Law of Laws of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, recognizes one of the Fundamental Rights of Animals: “the right to a favorable, healthy, protected and balanced environment, allowing their development in a normal and permanent way.” (NO zoos, kennels, animal show circuses, mascotting, vivisection, or any form of animal exploitation.)

The celebration events took place from the 5th to the 7th of October. We organised a series of animal-related film screenings in Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Sucre, La Paz and El Alto. The films shown were “Animal Wonders”, "Earthlings" and "Dog Fights" and the screenings were followed by an animal welfare debate. We also organised a Veggie Food Kermess (Food Fair), a wake for suffering animals on the eve of World Animal Day which was declared 'Festive Day'. Liliana Tellez-Flor, ADDA Bolivia.

Location: COSTA RICA - San Jose
Events: Monuments to Street Dogs
Hosted by: Pets y más & Asociación ‘El Arca de Noé , WSPA, Municipality of San José

The six monuments in honor of the street dog where inaugurated on the 20thof October. The Mayor of San José (capital of Costa Rica) gave an excellent speech with strong messages about the need to promote animal wellfare in Costa Rica. The ceremony was witnessed by a big crowd of visitors. The monuments are located in the center of San José in the pedestrianised Boulevard of San José which is also one of the busiest areas of the capital.

Basically the whole national media was there to cover the event, the reports were transmited the same day by all the leading TV stations and printed media of the country and also by the international press agency AFP, French Press.

Only a few days after the inauguration we are already receiving reports and pictures that the monuments are causing a big impact among all visitors to the area. People, adults and children take pictures of the dogs and read the messages that are displayed with all six dogs. The main plaque includes a strong message about animal wellfare and is meant to create a lot of awareness for animals.

The permanent monuments are based on real stories behind each model and are made from steel with strong colors which attract a lot of attention. A Costa Rican artist named Francisco Mungúia was contracted to create the art. The idea for the monuments was born when a rescue attempt of a three legged, abandoned German Shepherd Dog died after being poisoned by bad neighbors while being fostered. The same day, Patricia Artimaña of the Costa Rican Animal Sanctuary El Arca de Noé (Noah’s Ark) and Christine Bork from the pet magazine Pets y más, received an email from Mexico where another monument was put up.

With these monuments, Costa Rica is the 13th country in the world (to our knowledge) to have erected monuments dedicated to the street dog. We hope our initiative will motivate other groups to do something similar in their country, not only for the street dogs, but also for other animals, farm animals, wildlife and sealife; as they all need attention and respect urgently. A project of
The Municipality of San José, El Arca de Noe and the Pets y más magazine.

Location: MEXICO - Mérida Yucatan
Event: March for the Animals + Activities / Filmshow
Hosted by: Evolución AC

About 150 dogs of all shapes and sizes and their human families celebrated World Animal Day in the Miguel Alemán park. Our event began with a 'March for the Animals' around the park during which some of the participants carried placards against cruelty to animals. About 200 people joined the march. This was followed by a dog show with classes such as 'Most Pretty Female', 'Most Handsome Male', 'Funniest Trick', with prizes for the first three in each category. The winners also had to be in good health and be sociable. With the support of vets who work with us, we also provided free anti-rabies vaccinations for 102 dogs and distributed information about animal welfare issues. This event was supported by AMEDEA-MANT and the Ayuntamiento of Merida provided awnings and the sound system. Our second event was a screening of the film "Earthlings" at the University of Veterinary Medicine and Zootecnia in Merida. We are most grateful for the support we received to make our World Animal Day celebrations so successful. Marcia Lara Ruiz de Moreno and Silvia Cortés Castillo.

Location: MEXICO - Mexico City
Event: March for the Animals Awareness Event
Hosted by: El Zoo de Mexico

EL ZOO DE MÉXICO  (the mexican zoo) wishes to inform you about the World Animal Day events we held by the Mexican Revolution Memorial (Monumento a la Revolucion) in Mexico City's main square (Zocalo). Our event took place as scheduled. Our information display was appealing to passersby who stopped to look and this provided us with a great opportunity to talk with them and spread our message to the wider public. Everyone assembling for the march were in high spirits but peaceful and ready to let the streets hear the animals' voice by roaring chants and cheers all the way! Afterwards, the peaceful demonstrators headed back to the main square chanting and singing to the rythm of the 'Batucadas' (drums), and hading out leaflets to the public who reacted positively to our presence. 600-650 people started the march but by the time we had returned to the main square (zocalo) there were an estimated 1200-1500 people as many joined us en-route. This is especially interesting as it proves that an ever-increasing number of people are becoming sensitve to animal welfare issues. The event concluded with a big gathering in the main square who all got involved with a happy celebration jam, right at the foot of the giant national flag pole! Throughout the entire event people continuously visited our information stand expressing their interest to get involved and picking up leaflets. This was very rewarding and continued for 2 hours after the event was scheduled to close. As you can imagine, we are very happy to end this report with a "SUCCESS" stamp on it! Gabriela Rivera, El Zoo de Mexico.

Location: PERU - Colan - north western coast
Event: Animal Blessing Services
Hosted by: Asoc. Humanitaria San Francison de Asis

Here in Colan  on the north western coast of Peru it is mainly desert. There is a lot of poverty and we at AHFSA work with the animals of people who do not have the means to pay for care and do not have enough knowledge themselves. I have lived here for 13 yrs now and whilst we do not have any special events as such, we do have the Blessing every year and have done for the past three years. I have to add that convincing the priest to do this probably took two years beforehand! So, in fact this is a huge achievement! The priest held the Mass as usual and then afterwards he blessed the animals that were waiting outside the church. I feel it iss a good way for the people to learn and accept that it is OK to love and care for their animals. This year we organised Animal Blessing Services in two villages and both events were very successful. Rosemary Gordon www.ahfsa.org
