Animal Welfare Seminar for Teachers
KENYA - Mombasa Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) In our opinion the most imprtant thing in animal welfare is to educate the children as they are our future. Several weeks ago we organized an Animal Welfare Seminar for teachers from 15 different schools where they received the necessary information and materials to present lessons on animal welfare in the classroom. Our inspector has been visited the schools involved to see how the lessons are being received by the children and we have prepared a short test paper for the children to complete so that we can test the level of their newly aquired knowledge. The children who attain the top 5 result in each school are being invited to attend an event at the KSPCA to celebrate their success. There will be about 75 children and 15 teachers so it will be a pretty large affair! We can't teach the world in a day to respect animals but we can work towards this goal each day. So on World Animal Day we will celebrate all the work we have done throughout the year in order to improve the lives of animals. Marlen Enz, Kenya's World Animal Day Ambassador. We will send you some reports and photos after the ceremonie which we will also have in our newsletters and the newpapers to try to get more children interested. MARLEN ENZ, KENYA SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION AND CARE OF ANIMALS, MOMBASA

Raising public awareness of animal welfare issues in Egypt
EGYPT SPARE SPARE is preparing many events to commemorate World Animal Day. 1. Firstly, SPARE will deliver a message of compassion and respect via two major TV channels, ‘Animal Planet’ and ‘National Geographic’. The programmes will be broadcast during the month of October and be viewed throughout the world! 2. ‘World Woof Tour’ - Joanne Lefson with Oscar her dog left Cape Town 5 months ago to visit 36 shelters in 36 countries, to raise awareness about the benefits of adopting dogs from animal shelters, and to focus on promoting animal sterilisation. SPARE was the shelter chosen in Egypt (see event entry under South Africa). 3. On World Animal Day, I will once again draw public attention to my biggest issue this year: When the swine flu fear first emerged, long before even one case was reported in Egypt, the Government ordered that all 300,000 pigs were to be killed in order to prevent the spread of the disease. Public health experts said this was a misguided attempt to combat swine flu. We held a demonstration outside the Ministry of Agriculture who were responsible for the inhumane killing of the pigs and we managed to get huge media coverage of this action including TV programmes and newspaper articles. On World Animal Day we will present a petition of more than 2000 signatures to the authorities condemning the atrocious treatment of the pigs. 4. We are also in dialogue with the authorities asking them to stop the killing and poisoning of stray dogs from World Animal Day, 4th October, to 11th October. 5. We are working with our colleagues at the AWARE organization and sending out joint press releases to many newspapers and magazines about World Animal Day. 6. I will appear on a TV programme in Egypt on this special day for the animals. 7. A friend from Austria will be visiting our shelter and taking two animals back to Austria for rehoming. 8. I shall be using our media contacts to ensure the World Animal Day message is spread thoughout Egypt and we will use the horrible plight of the pigs as an example of how badly Egypt treats animals. Amina Abaza, SPARE & Egypt's World Animal Day Ambassador.

Donation of food for the animals of the Abidjan National Zoo
CÔTE D’IVOIRE Monde Animal En Passion-MAEP Due to circumstances beyond our control, we've had to postpone this event, but it will take place at a later date. Kind regards Yao Novalis. In celebration of World Animal Day we will be organizing a donation of food for the animals of the Abidjan National Zoo. We will invite the press, media and television to attend the official handover in order to emphasize the importance of this act and, at the same time, highlight the meaning of this special day to the Ivorian nation. For your information, the Abidjan National Zoo animals face: malnutrition and under nutrition; lack of care and health monitoring; death and multiple injuries due to outdated facilities; woeful lack of space; crucial lack of organization to provide the animals with their basic needs which currently falls far short of even providing a minimum level of comfort. Our World Animal Day gift will be an ideal opportunity to advocate for the improvement of the plight of these animals at the Abidjan National Zoo. In summary, the objectives of this event are: 1. To expose the deplorable existence of the Abidjan National Zoo animals. 2. To analyse the plight of animals in Ivory Coast and evaluate the implementation of measures appropriate for a sustainable development - benefits for all, animals included. 3. To highlight the need for a commitment from all members of the community to show respect for all animals. Yao Novalis, Founder and President of Monde Animal En Passion-MAEP and World Animal Day Ambassador, Côte d'Ivoire.

Oscar - the globe-trotting mutt
SOUTH AFRICA - Cape Town Joanne Lefson Oscar Lefson is embarking on the journey of a lifetime. Oscar, aged seven, will travel to 33 countries on five continents in the space of five months. Along the way, he'll surf, hang glide, climb Mount Fuji and rely on planes, trains and ferries to get around. That's no mean feat for a dog. Oscar and his owner, Joanne Lefson, left Cape Town on 2nd May and flew to Gaborone, Botswana, to begin their big adventure. The purpose of the trip, dubbed the World Woof Tour, is to raise awareness about the benefits of adopting dogs from animal shelters, and to focus on promoting animal sterilisation. Before boarding a plane to Gaborone, they made a guest appearance at the annual Mutt of the Year competition, held at Camps Bay High School. Oscar, whom Joanne adopted from the SPCA, won Mutt of the Year in 2004. Joanne said she had been inspired to plan the journey because she wanted to draw attention to the fact that "there are amazing dogs just like him" at animal shelters. Oscar has been fully vaccinated and is "eating free-range chicken" in preparation for his trip. The pair will not be visiting any countries that require dogs to be quarantined apart from Malaysia, which has agreed to waive laws for Oscar. "It's going to be a hectic five months, but … if Oscar's not comfortable with something, like our plan to hang glide off Sugarloaf Mountain in Brazil, we won't do it," Joanne said. on. She and Oscar will return to Cape Town on October 4, World Animal Day. Visit www.worldwooftour.com for more information
Fundraising and Educational Day
SOUTH AFRICA - Robertson, Western Cape Winelands SPCA Robertson Spring Show, Western Cape, South Africa This year, Winelands SPCA will have a fundraising stand and a separate educational stand at Robertson Spring Show, Western Cape. Joining us will be Animal Voice and Compassion in World Farming. Together we hope to raise awareness of the plight of animals in this beautiful part of South Africa, and also the pleasure a well-loved mutt or moggy can bring to people’s lives. We think the highlight of our work at the show will be presentations by local farm schools. Children from very underprivileged areas will have the opportunity to show what animals mean in their lives – this can be through drama, music or dance. Much enthusiasm is being shown for this project and schools are currently busy preparing their mini concerts. This information will be updated in due course. Sarah Ford, World Animal Day Ambassador, South Africa. Email: misa@telkomsa.net
