| Saved from China's meat trade |
| CHINA - Shanghai
|
ARC China |
In honour of World Animal day Sabrina, we have rescued 6 puppies and 4 adult dogs and saved them from the meat trade in Shanghai. It was drawn to our attention that some of the dogs at the nearby construction site had already been caught by the site workers and sold for meat and, once the puppies were bigger their fate would be the same. Sabrina persuaded the site workers to sell the dogs to her and then we found a safe haven for them until suitable new homes can be found. We cleaned the dogs up, de-flead them and the puppies were given their first injection. The older dogs are a bit nervous at the moment but when they've settled down they will be spayed / neutered before being rehomed. Three of the puppies have already been adpopted which is great news. Vicky and Joy Gao and Sabrina. |

| Smash a Soup Bowl to Save the Sharks |
| SINGAPORE
|
ACRES |
When was the last time you were encouraged to break things? This weekend, ACRES is inviting everyone to come into town to throw a soup bowl against a wall. The broken pieces will be used on spot to create a work of are - a gigantic, 15m long mosaic of a shark. As many as 100 million sharks are killed every year, and many of them end up in soup bowls across Asia. The shark fin soup tradition is wasteful and destructive, because when sharks die the entire marine food chain also collapses. So for this World Animal Day, we are asking you to help reverse this habit, and start putting sharks back together. You will be asked to donate $2 for each soup bowl, and the proceeds will go towards ACRES' education and animal welfare efforts. So come down to The Atrium@Orchard, near Plaza Singapura, between 10am and 10pm on 2nd - 4th October to show that you care about animals, the environment and about leaving our marine legacy for future generations. And have fun smashing bowls, breaking traditions and creating are - all at once. Louis Ng, ACRES and Singapore's World Animal Day Ambassador. Nifty Corporation |
My name is Akira Okamoto and I'm delighted to inform you that our organisation will be participating in World Animal Day celebrations this year. Since July 2008, we have been running "Dog Actually", a blog media that focuses on dogs and dog-related matters here in Japan where dogs face very difficult circumstances. Our main aim is to draw public attention to a different point of view, in the hope that we can change their attitude towards dogs. The use of internet media gives people the chance to have their say and consider the views of others at the same time. Now we move on to the second step, our World Animal Day event to which we have invited guest speakers from various animal welfare fields. We are hoping this event will persuade the audience to start thinking about animals differently; to take a step forward and start treating them with the respect they deserve. When: 13:00 - 15:30 on 4th October. Where: Tokyo Culture Culture, Zepp Tokyo 2F, Pallette Town, Aomi 1-chome, Koto-ku, TOKYO. We pride ourselves on using best practices widely accepted by the international sheltering community and providing the highest possible standard of care for every animal that crosses our threshold. Because of our open door policy, we have thus far provided care for dogs, cats, turtles, tortoises, various birds, ferrets, rabbits, chipmunks, gazelles, donkeys, goats, and baboons. This year our World Animal Day celebration will take place at Palate Palette from 2.30pm - 5.00pm on Sunday 4th October. Palate Palette is an animal-friendly restaurant where pet owners can take their 4-legged companions to watch the world go by and meet other 4-legged companions. We will raise funds for three companion animal charities: Furry Friends Farm - currently taking the lead in the Pulau Ketam incident; Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary - located in Johore Bahru, southern Malaysia; Independent Pet Rescuers - one of the pioneers of animal rescue. Pet Parents will be charged RM50 per person to cover the fabulous vegetarian menu prepared by Palate Palette and a percentage will be held to help fund next year's World Animal Day celebration. Goodie bags will be given out containing 'Addiction' dog/cat food samples, gift vouchers, 'Magic Mutt Balls' from the Bark-ery and pamphlets on dog husbandry, animal welfare issues including advice on what to do if you see any animal cruelty. One of the event's main attractions this year will be enhancing animal communication where pet owners can submit a photo of their pet via email to an 'Animal Communicator' and list down questions about what they want to know about their pet. A fee of RM50 will be charged with 50% going towards helping to fund next year's WAD event. Photographs need to be submitted between August 19 and September 19. The animal communicator is someone who has the ability to communicate with animals by connecting spiritually and speaking from the heart - one of the first steps in developing one's psychic ability. There will also be a professional photographer present to take photographs of pets and their owners, a Quiz about dog and cat husbandry with prizes and a Pet Massage demonstration. Of course, the media will be invited to attend.

Bring the Elephant Home |
Join our race for the survival of Thai elephants! The weekend of World Animal Day we challenge you to join our 'Bike for Elephants' tour in Northern Thailand. A two day adventurous and fun tour through Mae Tang valley, in Chiang Mai province.
This event will raise funds for the Elephant Nature Park and create awareness about the plight of Thai elephants. The Elephant Nature Park, in a beautiful mountain range north of Chiang Mai, is a safe home to rescued elephants that were previously abused and neglected. The route: Tour de Chang.
We will depart from Chiang Dao and then follow the river down stream to the Elephant Nature Park where we will camp on Saturday night. Here the cyclists will not only have a chance to refresh in the river while washing liberated elephants, but also to learn about natural elephant behavior and to see how their money will be spent. The next day we will cycle through the mountains towards the finish in Sop Poeng. Please join us - or even organise a team! A team needs to have 4 members, one being nominated as team leader. As a team you will receive your own page on our website www.bring-the-elephant-home.org to help you with online fundraising. The teams will set their own target for their fundraising efforts, but a minimum amount of 25,000 baht per team is required.
