Launch of 'Counting to Zero' Campaign
LITHUANIA Lithuanian Society for the Protection of Animals On World Animal Day LiSPA will nationally announce its new 'Counting to Zero' campaign in Anyksciai, Lithuania. The event will begin with a special church mass honoring St Francis, followed by a schoolchildren's concert, an animal-themed art show, award ceremony and a picnic. The campaign will primarily focus on the unnecessary breeding of dogs and cats which are being killed in shelters. Last year 123 metric tonnes of previously owned pets were euthanised and sent to the Animal Waste Processing Plant. Reducing these numbers will require the campaign be fourfold: 1) the campaign's primary partner is the State Food and Veterinary Service which will assist in incorporating a new and mandatory nationwide pet regisitration scheme 'My License is My Ticket Home'. Pets will wear identity tags provided by veterinarians during annual rabies vaccinations. 2) LiSPA will spearhead efforts in lobbying government to make amendments to national and local animal welfare legislation. 3) The Lithuanian Small Animal Veterinary Association will assist with low-cost spay/neuter programmes, and - 4) LiSPA will coordinate humane education and fundraising programmes. The Campaign will be a major project requiring the cooperation of many institutions and together - we will make a difference! Ben Noreikis

World Animal Day celebration
Fundraising Auction
GREECE - Island of Paros Paros Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) This year the Paros Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) plans to hold an auction in the popular art gallery 'Apothiki' in the capital Parikia, on Saturday 3 October 2009. Local stores, hotels, restaurants, artists and other individuals are offering quality goods and services to benefit the stray dogs and cats of Paros. A bazaar and boutique section will also sell items at full value. Cats and dogs for adoption will be on show. September is the time when hotels and restaurants close, summer residents leave the island and scores of cats are left alone to fight the cold, hunger and disease. In addition, the hunting season is on and 'defective' hunting dogs are abandoned on the highway, as are dogs that are no longer desired by departing vacationers. PAWS desperately needs funding for sterilizations, vet care, rehoming programs, and winter feeding. Tallin Celebrates World Animal Day
ESTONIA - Tallin ESPA On 4th October, we will hold a large celebration of World Animal Day in Tallinn. The Estonian Society for the Protection of Animals (ESPA) and Tallinn Environmental Board is organizing a bigger event in Estonia's Capital City this year. The Kristiine City Government has kindly provided the premises on Tulika Street 33C ffree of charge for us to hold our event. In cooperation with other non-profit animal-related organisations, an exhibition 'Stories of Animals' will be displayed, enabling visitors to learn about the different fates of very different animals. Some stories have a happy ending while others do not. Animals who have survived various hardships (cats, dogs, tortoises etc) and their caretakers will also be present at the exhibition and other stories will be presented with photos. The most gruesome examples of what people are capable of doing to animals will be set up in a separate room along with the so-called pillory – an overview of the Estonian court practise concerning offences against animals. Children will not be allowed to enter this room. In another room children will be able to watch a puppet show, led by Loone Ots, about 'The problems faced by city animals'. Children will also be able to make and draw postcards for charity purposes and complete puzzles. Additionally ESPA will also announce the most animal-friendly and animal-hostile acts of the year. Information will be available about various animal welfare issues. The event will begin at 12 noon and everyone is welcome to attend. Throughout October, ESPA will conduct an awareness campaign inviting peopel to show they care about animals by making a donation that will be used to help people with financial difficulties pay for veterinary care and spaying/neutering. This initiative will help animals already in distress and also to prevent the spread of stray and unwanted animals as well as animals in need of help. Evelyn Valtin.

Raffle tickets will also be on sale with prizes such as a laptop (courtesy of Info) and digital photo camera (courtesy of Fotomaris). The charities have chosen the theme of celebration in recognition that animals help us daily and giving joy as domestic pets or helping us as animals of service. People find happiness and companionship from a wide range of pets. Animals also assist people in need from guide dogs for the blind to rescue dogs in disaster situations as well as in use against crime. This will be a unique event with the aim of leaving a positive feeling and with people appreciating and recognizing the importance of welfare for animals and the benefits they bring to all our lifes. Blessing for ALL Animals of the World
AUSTRIA, Linz Parish of St Peter, Linz Saint Francis of Assisi is the Patron Saint of the Animals. His commemoration is on the 4th of October. This is also World Animal Day. For many years all pets living within the boundaries of the Parish of St. Peter in Linz, Austria have been blessed individually during Holy Mass on the Sunday nearest World Animal Day. The animal blessing ceremony will be take place in the church square, weather permitting. Incase of inclement weather, the service will take place in the church. Worldwide Participation possible! In previous years we've received many telephone calls and emails from people who were unable to come to the animal blessing with their pets for various reasons such as too far to travel or poor health. For those who are unable to attend in person, it's possible to post or email a photograph of their pet, with its name, for inclusion in the animal blessing service. We will display the photographs on the wall and they will receive God's blessing during the ceremony. Last year we received 550 emails from around the world with 900 pictures of animals requesting prayer and blessing. Dr. Judith Eigl, Veterinary Surgeon, has generously agreed to cover the cost of printing the colour photographs of all the animals. There is no charge for attending the service and, after the animal blessing, all participants will receive a photograph of the celebration by mail or email free of charge. Yours sincerely, Franz Zeiger, Pfarrer, www.dioezese-linz.at/linz-stpeter
