| Vicar of Dibley Comes to Larne |
| NORTHERN IRELAND - Country Antrim
|
All Saints' Church, Larne |
Following in the footsteps of the well-known BBC 'Vicar of Dibley’, All Saints’ Church, Larne are hosting their first ever parish Blessing of the Animals Service. Pampered pets and amazing animals of all shapes and sizes are expected to swell the congregation, along with a host of special guests.
These include Cara Barr (Larne Borough Council Bio-diversity Officer) with a collection of small friends (stick insects, a gecko and a snake!), Gawn Graham (Larne Environmental Warden) and local celebrity “Thistle” the Donkey.
God created a kaleidoscope of fabulous creatures with whom we share our planet and many that are now much-loved working animals, pets and companions in our homes. The service aims to give thanks and praise for them all.
The service is of course open to everyone and will involve clergy from three denominations (plus their dogs!): Sister Anna Hainey (Sisters of the Cross and Passion, Drumalis) with Scott the Golden Retriever/Red Setter cross, Revd Anne Tolland (Cairncastle Presbyterian Church) with Alfie, the miniature Schnauzer and Roger Thompson (Rector of St Patrick’s with All Saints’)with Nugget the Golden Labrador.
Roger commented, “This will be a new experience for me, but being an animal-lover myself I'm really looking forward to it. Judging by the response I’ve had in local schools as I’ve spread the word, the church is going to be packed (excuse the pun!)”
The Service coincides with both “World Animal Day” (October 4th) and Guide Dog Week (5 – 11 October) and half of the collection will be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Owners are requested to keep their animals under control at all times so that peace may truly reign during the service.

Karen Johnson - Areva T&D |
I work at AREVA T&D at Stafford and last year I collected food, toys, blankets, towels, washing powder, baskets, bedding etc. from colleagues and friends at work. These were then given to the Cats Protection League at Stafford and the Sunnyside Kennels at Coven along with a donation from myself and any funds collected. I will be doing the same this year, posters will be ready for Monday. The photographs
from the collection last year are the first ones you see when going onto the 2008 UK link so I am hoping for more this time! Some people remembered after last year and have already asked when WAD is this year, I have also had a few people constantly give me pet food, blankets, beds, towels etc during the year as they know that I can pass them on. Therefore, the charities have not only benefitted from the collection itself but also through the year they have had donations that they normally would not have had which is what it is all about! Kind regards Cobby (nickname) Johnson. |

Bath Cats and Dogs Home |
Bath Cats & Dogs Home is inviting animal lovers, pet owners past and present, and anyone else who would like to join them to celebrate the joy of animals at a special ‘Celebrating Our Pets’ Service at Bath Abbey on Saturday 3rd October at 3pm.
The animal charity is organising the ‘Celebrating our pets’ event as part of World Animal Day on 4 October, which is widely celebrated in countries worldwide and is intended as a day of celebration for anyone who cares about animals. The aim is to encourage animal lovers to use this special day to commemorate their love and respect for animals by doing something unusual to highlight the importance of wild and domestic animals. As well as a sermon, hymns and a spiritual element, the Blessing Service will also feature a presentation on the Home’s work as well as some background history; issues the charity faces today and a testimony, ‘How this animal has changed my life,’ from an owner looking at the difference Bath Cats and Dogs Home has made to both a person’s and animal’s life. The service will last around 45 minutes.
Liz Goddard, events co-ordinator, comments: "This is the first animal service the Abbey has ever held – and the first time we have organised such an event, so we are hoping it will capture the public’s imagination. We would like to invite everyone in the community to join us to honour and celebrate all God’s creatures and the special relationships we share with them and look forward to as many of you as possible joining us for this unique event." October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day since it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Launched in the UK on 4 October 2003. organisations, groups, animal shelters, places of worship, schools, clubs and individuals who participated in what was to become an annual event helped make history.
Since the official World Animal Day website was launched in 2003, the number of World Animal Day events taking place worldwide has increased year upon year.
