Heartlight Peace Ministries / Northeast Animal Shelter |
Animal Blessings Foster Appreciation for World Animal Day. In what will look like a scene from a "Doctor Doolittle" movie, on October 10 from 11am – 2pm at the Northeast Animal Shelter, animals of all shapes and sizes will be barking, meowing, chirping and maybe even hissing as they line up to be blessed by Reverend Annika Kleschinsky of Heartlight Peace Ministries of Swampscott, MA. In its 2nd year, this community event is sponsored by the Northeast Animal Shelter for World Animal Day. The shelter is located at 347 Highland Avenue in Salem, MA where the event will be held in the back parking lot. The shelter is expanding the blessing this year with greater outreach to promote awareness of animal welfare as well as people and organizations that promote animal products and services. Local non-proft animal groups and pet businesses will have educational information and items for sale during the event. The event will be held rain or shine and is open to everyone and their pets. Felines, birds and other small animals need to come in a carrier or cage. Canines must be on a leash. Prior to the individual blessings at 11:15 am, a short ceremony will be given including a message from Rev. Annika on how to nurture your pets from a more spiritual and holsitic perspective. If a person is unable to bring a pet for a blessing because the pet is ailing or has passed on, a prayer request card will be made, or a person can bring a photograph of the pet (that will not be returned) which will blessed at the close of the event by Rev. Annika. Established in 1976, the Northeast Animal Shelter is one of New England's largest nonprofit shelters that does not destroy any of the pets entrusted to its care. The Shelter has developed many programs such as Puppies Across America, Sato Rescue, Greyhound Rescue, Mother Animal Spay, Humane Education, Foster Care, Stray Cat Rescue, and Senior Visitation. For info on the shelter or to make a donation in honor of World Animal Day, visit www.northeastanimalshelter.org. For more info on the animal blessings call the shelter at 978-745-9888. | Campaign to ban the declawing of cats in USA |
| USA - Nationwide
|
Saving Cat Claws |
On October 4th, please join us by doing 3 very important things:
1.) Signing our petiton to The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) to help BAN declawing in the USA! http://www.petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=4312
2.) Write to the AVMA to ask them to urge their veternarians to stop performing declaw & other paw maiming surgeries on cats. According to their own guidelines, US veterinarians are to provide comlete education about natural cat behavior & the true nature of declaw surgery to their clients, yet many US vets encourage it, advertise it, and cross sell it in spay/neuter packages making this unnecessary convenience surgery, which has no benefit to the animal & can cause harm to the animal, a billion dollar industry in America. Tell the AVMA to join the rest of the progressive world and stop declawing and maiming healthy cat paws! avmainfo@avma.org, avmagrd@avma.org, MLutschaunig@avma.org
3.) Please light a candle of gratitude to give thanks for all of the veterinarians around the world who do not declaw or maim cat paws, and give thanks for all the cats that get to live their precious lives as "cats" with their useful & valuable claws and healthy & complete paws!

American Catholic |
Each September, the AmericanCatholic.org website helps pet lovers celebrate the October 4 feast of Saint Francis of Assisi with its online feature “Pet Blessings Around the U.S.” People all over the world bring their pets to churches to receive a blessing or pray over them at home, to honor this beloved 12th century saint who is the patron of animals and the ecology. ACO provides a way for those in many parts of this country to locate pet blessing services in their towns. Information including addresses, dates, and phone numbers is solicited and received from Christian and non-denominational churches, schools, humane societies and animal shelters and posted online by state. In 2008, 627 services (up from 570 in 2007) representing 48 states and Canada appeared in the listings. Blessing services range from the extravagant with elephants and camels participating, to the simple with primarily household pets and stuffed toys. We also want to bring awareness to the public about puppy mills, as shamefully, Quebec is the capital of puppy mills in Canada. Our plans have been developing for many months and we are very excited about it. Jim Willis has kindly given his permission for Christiana to read a page or two from his book "How could You?" to the audience at the fundraising event. | Quebec City Marks World Animal Day |
| CANADA - Quebec City, Quebec
|
Organised by Chantal Ronda, animal lover, Quebec City |
Come celebrate World Animal Day for the first time in Quebec City! 4 October, 12:30pm at the Parliament of Quebec. Animal lovers will join a peaceful march, carrying white biodegradable balloons as a sign of respect for the animals. Following the march, there will be a release of white doves on a background of acoustic music by Martin Carré. The Honorable Marlene Jennings, MP for the Liberal Party, will address the public before the march. (Note that after the march, the doves will be returned home and all the balloons will be collected.) This march will aim at convincing the Quebec government of the lack of animal protection laws and will remind them that the minimal sentences given to animal abusers is far from enough. Join us with your placard calling for a review into Quebec's animal welfare legislation where there are still gas chambers in our shelters, where animals are killed in atrocious ways, and this is unacceptable. The Quebec Bar has opposed the recognition of animals as living, sentient beings. More than 2,000 puppy mills still operate in Quebec. It is a paradise for animal abusers, who only receive a $140 fine and their crimes are soon forgotten. Such is the law in Quebec! Changes are needed now!! For more information and to confirm your participation in this event, please contact Chantal Ronda by sending an email to: jmda@live.ca Website: www.lesevenementsarsenik.com/jmdaqc.html |

| World Animal Day comes to Edmonton's Valley Zoo |
| CANADA - Edmonton
|
Valley Zoo, Edmonton, Canada |
One of the relatively tranquil seasons at the Valley Zoo is already going to be busier than usual this year, and now it’s about to get a whole lot wilder, too. Edmonton’s zoo has been selected as one of just two in Canada to participate in World Animal Day on October 4, the same weekend that the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums conference is in town.
As part of the annual day celebrating animal life around the world, the zoo will hold a series of animal photography workshops with National Geographic photographers, including Ian Nichols, who has risen to fame for his pictures of African apes and gorillas.
"If you see his work, it’s absolutely incredible," says Tyler Pollock, the zoo’s special events co-ordinator. "So it’s a very cool thing for us to do in October. That’s usually our slower time."
Pollock spent the last few months meeting with National Geographic representatives, making a pitch for having World Animal Day at the Valley Zoo, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary and beginning significant renovations.
"The communication we’ve had with National Geographic has indicated they’re pretty keen on our facility and our redevelopment and the events that we’ve done and hosted in recent history, but also keen to be part of the CAZA conference," says Pollock.
The conference runs September 30 to October 3 at West Edmonton Mall, with Nichols among scheduled keynote speakers.
World Animal Day, which was started nearly 80 years ago in Italy by ecologists as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species, will also be celebrated this fall at the Toronto zoo.
