Symposium to avoid animal testing
GERMANY - Hannover Tierärztliche Hochschule On 4 and 5 October 2010 we will be holding the first symposium on "Alternative and Complementary Methods to Animal Experiments" at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover. In 2008, Germany used 2.7 million animals most of which are rats and mice. The usefulness of the results achieved in animal experiments, and the right of man to use animals for experiments, has been intensively discussed for many years. In order to reduce the number of animals used, scientists are looking for alternative testing methods.
Animal Welfare Department Symposium
BELGIUM - Brussels Belgian Federal Public Service On the 4th of October 2010 the ‘Animal Welfare Department’ of the Belgian Federal Public Service ‘Public Health’ will organise a symposium on the keeping of rabbits. The start of the symposium will provide an overview of the current economic situation of the rabbit meat market, followed by a closer look at the biology and natural behaviour of rabbits. The day will continue with speakers from Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland who will describe different housing systems that are currently in use in their respective countries. Other subjects that will be handled include the recommendations that were issued by EFSA and the influence of public perception and animal welfare campaigns on commercial rabbit keeping. Pet rabbits will also get a mention with a presentation on the welfare problems that these animals can be confronted with. The symposium will be held in the Belgian Parliament, presentations will be in Dutch and French (with simultaneous translation in both languages). Dr Ester Peeters, Scientific Advisor for the Animal Welfare Council (Belgium).
World Animal Day brings new lives for Greek Stray Dogs
GREECE - Skiathos to UK Veterinary Assist Charitable Trust / Greek Animal Rescue On the 4th October we will be driving 3000 miles (round trip) to collect 15 dogs from a shelter in Skiathos and bringing them back to the UK where loving new owners are waiting. This trip will take us 10 days and we are offering our services for free. Vesna Jones of Greek Animal Rescue has been coordinating and undertaking these trips for years, but this is the first year that the two organisations will work together. Veterinary Assist is an independent animal ambulance service that provides subsidised transport to the elderly and disabled and also to clients who use animal charities such as the RSPCA, Blue Cross and PDSA, as well as private individuals. We also assist stray and abandoned dogs and cats free of charge as well as rescuing and transporting British wildlife from baby birds to foxes to rescue centres and wildlife hospitals. Tania Gibbins, Veterinary Assist Charitable Trust (Registered charity Number 1104309)

Cats and Culture Tour of Italy
ITALY Friends of Roman Cats Friends of Roman Cats helps feral and community cats in Italy and in the United States. We support an ever-growing number of groups in Italy that work to spay and neuter Italy's street cats. From Oct 7th to Oct 19, we offer a tour of Italy that focuses on some of the great Italian cat groups that work to spay, neuter and care for Italy's street cats. We feel it important to see how people are doing things to help animals in another country. Italy has been a No-Kill nation since 1991. We can see what is working, what needs improvement. Most of all we will meet dedicated individuals and the great cats they care for. The 'Cats and Culture' tour starts in Venice, then visits Padua, Florence, the Tuscan countryside, Arezzo, Siena and Rome. We will visit cats in Venice's main hospital, a Renaissance garden in Florence and cats living amid Roman ruins among other places. The tour only costs US $2,400 double occupancy. This does not include air fare, but includes lodging, transportation some meals, guides, entrance to the sites we visit. To find out more visit our website: www.friendsofromancats.org, San Francisco. Petition to Help End Bear Farming in Korea
GERMANY Rebecca Stache, World Animal Day Ambassador With the support of Ursa Freedom Project, Rebecca started a petition which aims to help end bear farming in Korea. There are fewer than 20 Asiatic Black Bears roaming the Korean wild today, and they are kept in a highly monitored region and marketed as a tourist attraction. A staggering 1600 suffer in terribly inhumane, highly unregulated conditions at bear bile farms, awaiting slaughter for their parts. We must stop it now. Please help Bear Necessity Korea and Ursa Freedom Project by signing this petition. World Animal Day 2010 will be the last day to add your signature, so please hurry up! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/end-bear-bile-farming-in-korea

Blessing Service for ALL Animals
AUSTRIA - Linz Parish of St Peter Animal Blessing for ALL Animals of the World. Sunday, 3rd October 2010, 09:15 AM. Event venue: Pfarre Linz - St. Peter, Tungassingerstraße 23a, 4020 Linz, Austria. Phone: +43 732 341442 Fax: +43 732 341442-4 Saint Francis of Assisi is the Patron Saint of Animals. His commemoration is on the 4th of October which is also World Animal Day. For many years all pets living within the boundaries of the Parish of St. Peter in Linz have been blessed individually during Holy Mass on the Sunday nearest World Animal Day. The animal blessing ceremony will take place in the church square, weather permitting. Incase of inclement weather, the service will take place in the church. Worldwide Participation possible! In previous years we've received many telephone calls and emails from people who were unable to come to the animal blessing with their pets for various reasons such as too far to travel or poor health. For those who are unable to attend in person, it's possible to post or email a photograph of their pet, with its name, for inclusion in the animal blessing service. We will display the photographs on the wall and they will receive God's blessing during the ceremony. Last year we received over 700 emails from around the world with more than 1000 pictures of animals requesting prayer and blessing. Dr. Judith Eigl, Veterinary Surgeon, has generously agreed to cover the cost of printing the colour photographs of all the animals. There is no charge for attending the service and, after the animal blessing, all participants will receive a photograph of the celebration by mail or email free of charge. Pfarre Franz Zeiger.
