Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) & animal rescue, media & public awareness via humane education programmes, animal welfare advocacy and promotion of animal protection legislation.
OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:
Our team has been deeply involved in many major animal rescue actions and animal welfare events in the country. Meanwhile, we have successfully lobbied Chinese political advisors, members of the National People's Congress and the State Council counsellors to deliver animal protection legislation such as against cruelty to animals and to stop bear farming. However, there's a long way to go before any form of animal protection legislation is passed!
Given the especially important role the media plays in China and the reality that it’s not animal friendly, the fact that the mainstream media regularly keeps a collective silence on the brutal living conditions animals endure and marginalizes animal welfare issues, is a huge concern. In order to try and push the Chinese media as whole to face and report the reality of large scale serious animal suffering and abuse, in 2009, Zhang Dan and three other journalists founded the 'China Animal Protection Media Salon' in the country's capital city of Beijing. At the time of writing, we have nearly 100 members from the main stream state run and private media, with some 25-30 of them being proactive. About 10 events have been organized with different themes such as China Animal Protection Law Debate (expert draft edition), Stop the consumption of Cats and Dogs, Saving the Moon Bears, Stop Animal Abuse in Film & TV Production, etc. It has become a unique and valuable platform for the animal welfare causes in China.
March 2010 - We attended the 'International Forum on Chinese Legislation for the Protection and Management of Animals' in Beijing organized by the Institute of Law, Chinese Academy of Social Science, Animal Guardians Consulting Ltd., RSPCA. This was a great opportunity to speak with representatives from some of the small, grassroot NGOs about World Animal Day.
World Animal Day congratulates Zhang Dan who was one of the four people presented with the 'China Animal Protection & Management Legislation Promotion Award - Publicity' by the organisers of the forum.
