MISSION
Animals Asia Foundation is devoted to the needs of wild and domesticated species in Asia. We are working to end cruelty and restore respect for animals Asia-wide.

VISION
Change for all animals, inspired by empathy for the few. Our animal ambassadors embody the ideal that empathy for one animal can evolve into empathy for an entire species and ultimately for all species.

APPROACH
Animals Asia, managed by professionals resident in Asia, is committed to forging constructive solutions to problems that animals face in today’s changing environment. Implementation is through a dynamic three-pronged approach:

Investigation: Using the latest veterinary techniques, animal care and conservation science, our staff identify local needs and find solutions for both animals and people;

Negotiation: Cultivating sensitive communication and cooperation with governments to open the door to visionary win-win solutions;

Education: Creating inspired community-based programmes that spark far-reaching change in people’s attitudes, motivating them to co-exist peacefully with animals.

OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:

As Animals Asia’s China Dr Dog Manager, Irene Feng is driving our Friends….or Food? campaign and related animal-therapy projects, Dr Dog and Professor Paws. Through these groundbreaking programmes, we are working to end the terrible cat and dog meat trade in China and throughout Asia.

Irene is based in the southern city of Guangzhou, known as China’s cat and dog eating capital. She works extensively with the authorities and animal-welfare groups (both locally and throughout China) to bring about long-term change. Irene and her team are also spreading our messages far and wide to millions of Chinese bloggers and chatroom users.

Animals Asia’s biggest project involves the rescue of 500 suffering endangered bears from cruel bile farms in China. Through the Moon Bear Rescue, we are bringing them to our sanctuary in Sichuan province. The bears can spend more than 20 years in coffin-sized cages where they are milked for their bile through crude catheters or permanently open holes in their abdomens. The bile is used in traditional medicine, even though cheap herbal and synthetic alternatives are readily available. We are also rescuing 200 bears in Vietnam through a similar agreement with the authorities there.

Animals Asia has offices in HK, the UK, USA, Germany, Italy and Australia. We also have offices and Moon Bear Rescue Centres in Chengdu, China and Hanoi, Vietnam.
