SAW has worked hard to address some of the welfare problems in Ethiopia such as improper animal transportation, inhumane slaughter in abattoirs, inhumane management of stray dogs, abandonment of unwanted animals, inadequate handling of working animals, drought and animal loss, wildlife problems, animal mutilation and other forms of cruelty.
In order to tackle these problems, SAW has carried out, and continues to carry out, the following activities:
1. Create public awareness via written and verbal media; distribute a biannual Ethiopian Animal Welfare Newsletter; distribute posters / flyers.
2. Form 24 Animal Kindness clubs / Nature clubs at schools with the collaboration of WSPA and Addis Ababa Education Bureau. These clubs are the main outlets for animal welfare education.
3. Give training on animal welfare to AK/Nature clubs, members and others.
4. Work towards implementing rabies controls and a humane stray dog control programme - this has proved to be extremely difficult to achieve due to lack of regulations.
5. Stakeholder participation in the preparation of draft legislation relating to animals and the environment.
6. SAW supports various international animal welfare activities such as campaigns on prominent animal welfare issues, preparation of Universal Animal Welfare Declaration by the United Nations, World Animal Day celebration, etc.
7. Finally, SAW is working towards the construction of a temporary animal welfare clinic and the introduction of a spay/neuter programme for pet dogs in order to reduce the number of strays.
