OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) is the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in Hong Kong and the region. Founded in 1921 it works jointly with the community and government and is dedicated to improving animal welfare. It aims to prevent cruelty through education and enforcement of laws and improve other aspects of animal welfare through humane education, animal birth control and adoption, provision of veterinary services, animal advocacy and lobbying. The SPCA’s key areas of work are:
Operating a full-time 24 man Inspectorate to rescue and protect animals through rescue, inspection, investigation and enforcement of animal welfare law. Where necessary assisting the authorities in enforcement and facilitating the prosecution of offenders;
Running programmes to reduce unwanted animal populations through holistic approaches and de-sexing owned, unowned and feral animals;
Re-homing of abandoned and rescued animals;
Lobbying and campaigning for animal welfare;
Improving animal welfare standards; and
Educating the public and young people on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
The SPCA deals with a wide range of both wild and domestic animals such as this Macaque de-sexing programme.
The SPCA's Street Cat Programme (Cat Colony Care Programme) would rank as one of the biggest of any city in the world.
The SPCA Inspectorate record evidence to prosecute cruelty following a raid on an illegal breeder.
The SPCA's mobile surgeries are constantly utilised to de-sex the rural dog populations.
