AIMS / MISSION STATEMENT:

The KSPCA aims to promote the protection of all animals; to prevent cruelty to them and to relieve animal suffering.

Mission Statement:

  • To uphold the Laws of Kenya, specifically the prevention of cruelty to animals Act.
  • To provide a safe and healthy shelter for needy animals, including rescue, accommodation and medical treatment before rehoming. Provide medical treatment when necessary and the humane destruction of any animal that is suffering.
  • Neutering of all female dogs and cats that come under our care.
  • To run ‘Spay and Save’ campaigns and educate people on the importance of sterilization.
  • Hold rural clinics countrywide and educate the communities on the importance of vaccination programmes and deworming of their animals as well as promote awareness about general health and care of animals.
  • Assist local authorities in animal welfare policies.
  • To carry out regular inspections of slaughterhouses to ensure humane slaughter procedures are in place.
  • To maintain detailed records on all animals in our care; to make random 'home visits' to check on the well-being of animals that have been adopted and to ensure that owners of young animals adopted bring them to the clinic for sterilization.

OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:

The KSPCA was established in the early 1900's and is the only domestic animal welfare organization in Kenya. The work we do:

  • Admit abandoned / injured cats and dogs into our shelters
  • Teach Animal Welfare Education in schools
  • Rehome cats and dogs
  • Supervise the humane slaughter of animals in slaughter houses
  • Carry out Rabies campaigns in rural areas
  • Neuter dogs and cats (spay and save campaign)in house as well
  • Treat animals which come under our care.
  • Confiscate animals and prosecute people who mistreat them

Image left: After this puppy was run over by his owner’s car, the owner decided that, instead of taking the puppy to a vet, he would chop off half of the leg with a 'panca'. After we recieved a report about this incident, we confiscated the dog and had to amputate the remaining part of the leg because of infection. The owner was successfully prosecuted and now “Lucky” lives happily with me and never leaves my side.

during the vaccination campaign 2007. We vaccinate
the animals of poor local people free of charge. In
the photograph you can see our vet checking
some puppies for fleas and ticks.

running costs which is nearly 45000 pounds a year.

At the end of 2007, we received a grant from WSPA enabling us to convert the trailer to a mobile veterinary clinic for visting rural areas to carry out vaccinating and neutering in the field.
