To improve the lives of the domestic animals of Mauritius and to reduce the population of stray dogs and cats in a humane way.
PAWS Vision: That Mauritius will, one day, be known as a paradise for animals. |

PAWS, a charitable non-governmental organization, was founded by a group of animal lovers in 1999. Thanks to the Laureate Trust, the Ministry of Tourism and other sponsors, PAWS has sterilised more than 37,000 dogs and cats from 2000 to 2008, preventing the birth of many thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens. We have found good homes for more than 1,800 animals, rescued more than 6,500 animals in distress and treated more than 5,700 animals whose owners would not afford a private vet.
PAWS also educates the population in schools and social centres and on TV & Radio.
PAWS today employs 18 people, as we cannot rely solely on volunteers to do the work on a regular basis. However, we have about 30 active volunteers helping animals in distress in their own region, and the figures of their inestimable work are not mentioned in this report.
PAWS Educational Films
In 2007, while the Sterilisation Team carried on its mission, PAWS Management worked on the creation of fifteen 13-minute films. These programs are used to make the Mauritian community more aware of animal welfare. http://www.ile-maurice.tv/video/141629-paws-protection-of-animals-welfare-society.html
PAWS Web Site
In 2007, PAWS was very proud to launch its website which is a great way of promoting animal welfare in Mauritius and raising funds to help PAWS meet its budget. We are currently in the process of giving it a re-vamp.

PAWS Adoption Day - As PAWS is situated in the South of Mauritius, we organise an Adoption Day once a month at Le Caudan Waterfront, as this Commercial Centre is more accessible to animal lovers living in other regions of the Island. These adoption days are always very successful and on the day these images were taken, we found homes for 15 dogs and 8 cats. |
