OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:

February 2010 - We placed our first anti-bullfighting billboard of the year. The public ad that measures 13 by 7 meters is erected on one of the busiest avenues in Mexico City (Insurgentes Ave) where it will remain for two months. The billboard shows an empty bullfight ring with a tortured bull and the message reads: Cambiemos las plazas de tortura por espacios de cultura. NO a las corridas (Change bullfighting rings for cultural places NO to bullfighting). Our efforts will continue to end this brutal spectacle that takes place in eight countries. Image right.

Previously: A 12 X 8 metre billboard with a photo of a tortured and dying bull in the arena with the statement in both Spanish and English: SOME CONFUSE TORTURE WITH ART. WHAT DO YOU THINK? The billboard was located on one of the busiest avenues in Mexico City. This project was made possible with the sponsorship of CAS (Comité Anti Stierenvechten). Image left.

We held a forum-press conference in Mexico City with the topic: Cruelty to Animals and Social Violence. It was an opportunity to explain to the media why bullfighting should be eradicated. Animal activists gave their presentations to the press and we had the testimony of an ex-bullfighter. We also distributed messages from international organizations that support our work (see image right).

Bullfighting inflicts immense pain and suffering on the animals involved, just for the sake of “art, tradition and entertainment.” Bullfighting does not belong to the 21st century. Only a minority of Mexicans attend bullfights along with a number of tourists ignorant to the magnitude of the cruelty and violence that takes place during this so called spectacle.

Our work includes: children’s workshops and very soon the publication of coloring educational books. We hold conferences in universities, debates and interviews on the radio. We will continue disseminating information to the press. Also, our work plan includes: approaching legislators to request the implementation and application of a federal law to protect animals.

August 2008 - We are delighted that the Humane Society International (HSI) is supporting our campaign to end bull fighting in Mexico. Together, we have organised the display of a huge billboard on one of the busiest avenues in Mexico City, Calzada de Tlalpan, from August to the end of October. The billlboard shows a photo of a tortured and dying bull in an arena with the text in Spanish and English: Middle Ages or 21st Century, What age do you live in? Enough already!

Mexico is one of the few remaining countries where bullfighting is still legal. Even in these countries, local support for this outdated and cruel practice is waning. We strongly oppose government funding and promotion in support of the bullfighting industry. We are working to convince a publicly funded television station to permanently remove a bullfighting program from its schedule.
