AIMS / MISSION STATEMENT:

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society exists to prevent cruelty, alleviate pain, fear and suffering in animals, and to promote a society based on humane principles.

OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN:

PAWS runs an animal shelter called “PARC” (PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center) that serves as an animal-welfare information center and a low-cost spay-neuter clinic.  PARC attends to an average of 30 calls a day concerning different animal welfare, animal care, animal control concerns and helps local government officials with many of their animal-related problems. PARC is located at: Aurora Blvd., Katipunan Valley, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

PAWS has spayed /neutered and adopted out hundreds of dogs and cats since the shelter was established in 2001. Prior to its having a shelter, the organization was already doing humane education, campaigns and low-cost neutering albeit on a small scale.

In 1995, PAWS organized the very first animal blessings in Philippine churches in celebration of the Feast of St Francis of Assisi - World Animal Day October 4.  These animal blessings in a predominantly Catholic country paved the way for greater campaigns for animal welfare including the successful lobbying of the Animal Welfare Act - the first Philippine anti-cruelty law – in 1998.

PAWS campaigns actively against dogfights, horsefights and against wild animals being used for entertainment. It also promotes farm animal welfare by participating in roundtable discussions with government officials on Humane Slaughter guidelines and by acting as observer to the recent pig cull (due to the Ebola Reston virus) in Bulacan.

Two of its out-of-shelter programs are hugely popular among youngsters:  PAWS’ humane education session and the Doctor Dog Program.

The PAWS Humane Education Team reaches hundreds of school children of all ages by conducting school visits within Metro Manila.  It has modules for pre-school, elementary school, high school and lectures for students in university levels.

Moreover, PAWS conducts the Animal Asia Foundation's 'Doctor Dog Program in the Philippines (animal-assisted therapy). Over 100 visits to hospitals (image), schools and institutions have been clocked in by a handful of volunteer humans and their dogs since the Program was introduced in the country in 1998. Dr Dog aims to fight cruelties such as  the illegal Philippine dog meat trade in an unconventional way: by showing the public about the service that dogs render to Man. By highlighting how animals help people in the Doctor Dog program (not just 'people helping animals' all the time), it is hoped that society will begin to grasp more fully why all animals deserve our respect and protection – beginning with our beloved companion animals.
