The Taiwan SPCA was founded in June 2009 by British expat Sean McCormack, Taiwanese-Canadian sisters Connie and Annie Chiang, and Beki Hunt, also from Canada. Based on the policies and principles of the UK’s RSPCA, the Taiwan SPCA aims to alleviate cruelty to animals through legislation, education and campaigning, assisting in the prosecution of animal abusers, and rescuing animals in need.
Currently in the process of applying for national non-profit status, the Taiwan SPCA is already very active rescuing and rehoming dogs, cats, and other animals; campaigning to encourage neutering of companion animals and to highlight the suffering in intensive farming methods; and, through its inspectorate, investigating and bringing about prosecution of those who wilfully harm non-human animals. The Taiwan SPCA Adoption Shop is scheduled to open in late 2010, and a model shelter in 2011.
The Taiwan SPCA believes that animal welfare is an essential part of the social development of a nation and an excellent way for Taiwan to demonstrate its standing as a responsible member of the international community.
