Aims / Mission Statement:

The LSPCA’s vision is to create an environment that provides for both optimum animal welfare and human livelihoods in Malawi.  Our mission is to create greater awareness within our country and region of animal welfare issues through targeted animal welfare education.  We work with local authorities to enforce animal welfare legislation, support the development of new regulations and legislation, provide free spay and primary health services in high density areas and provide veterinary care to vulnerable animals both at our Veterinary Clinic and The Centre for Animal Welfare.

Overview Of Activities:

The LSPCA in Lilongwe Malawi is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country.  Our qualified and dedicated team of 16 permanent staff run a Veterinary Clinic, Rehoming Shelter and the Centre for Animal Welfare in Malawi.  Through the Centre for Animal Welfare we connect with a wealth of people and animals –livestock and donkey owners, farmers, pet owners, students at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), public health authorities, police services and national and international policy makers.  We provide veterinary care, veterinary training and dog population management to the residents in Lilongwe and surrounding areas.

Here’s how we do it!

The Donkey Sanctuary partners with us to improve the welfare of donkeys.  We deliver  welfare messages to children and families where donkeys support their livelihoods, offer  technical expertise for donkey harness and cart manufacturing  and our vet team  provide much needed veterinary care to donkeys in need.

World Animal Net is piloting a Humane Education curriculum in Malawi and the LSPCA’s Humane Education Team deliver lessons to 160 students in urban and rural settings in Malawi.  Our hope is to include Humane Education in the national primary curriculum to reach every child in Malawi by 2020.

The LSPCA provides a practical platform for trainee vets and the trainee assistant veterinary officers studying at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).  We partner with the Welttierschutzgesellschaft (WTG) on their VETS United training programme. This partnership enables the LSPCA team to offer weekly farm clinics and spay days where our vet team practise alongside the students in a normal working environment to develop skills in aptitude and attitude.  Here we help the Department of Animal Health monitor herd health of farm animals.
