ANA SOFIA RÓIS
Ana Sofia Róis is an Assistant Professor at the School of Psychology and Life Sciences at Universidade Lusófona, recognised for her expertise in animal welfare. With a strong background in shelter medicine, she has collaborated extensively with national and international animal welfare organisations. Since 2023, Ana Sofia Róis has been part of the Postgraduate Program in Animal Welfare at the University of Porto, where she teaches Animal Welfare modules for municipal veterinarians. She is also a trainer and consultant for the NGO – Public Utility – Animais de Rua, and she works closely with municipalities to develop protocols for stray animal sterilisation programs (TNR) and promote responsible pet ownership. Her commitment to animal welfare drives her efforts to implement effective pet-friendly policies and practices.
Animais de Rua is an organisation that helps thousands of stray animals, neutering them so they don’t reproduce, providing medical care when they are sick, and feeding them. They promote a peaceful coexistence between animals and people, respecting both animal welfare and public health. Animais de Rua was created precisely to try to alleviate the suffering of these animals and to prevent others to be born under the same conditions. The organisation directs their efforts and resources not only to the promotion of animals’ welfare but also to the defence of public health, as well as people’s safety and comfort.
