KARLA JOHANNA DUARTE TERCERO
Karla is a lawyer and was an Environmental Prosecutor of the Public Ministry, founder and president of the Honduran Association for the Protection of Animals and their Environment (AHPRA), with more than 20 years of activism in the defence of animal rights. Karla has a diploma in Animal Law from the University of the Argentine Social Museum and a Diploma in Animal Rights from the Universidad Latina de Guerrero. She has undertaken a lot of training on the subject, including the construction of public animal protection policies.
Karla defended the approval of the animal law and the new crimes against animal welfare in the current Penal Code before the National Congress of Honduras. She has trained more than 5,000 public servants on the subject of the Animal Protection and welfare law and other related laws. Karla also has experience in investigating cases of abuse and crimes against animal welfare and biological diversity. Karla has worked as a consultant for the organization Humane Society International LA and currently works as an independent consultant in the area of Animal Law.
The Honduran Association for the Protection of Animals and their Environment (AHPRA) was founded in 2004 by two lawyers committed and involved in the defence of all animals. Among the main activities of the Association, the campaigns that emphasise animal sentience, the dissemination of current animal legislation and free legal advice to citizens, organizations and municipalities stand out. AHPRA has documented and filed complaints for infractions and crimes committed to the detriment of non-human animals, achieving significant sanctions and convictions in the country. The organisation also fights for the approval of new regulations that effectively protect animals in general.

Abogada, exfiscal de Medio Ambiente del Ministerio Público, fundadora y presidenta de la Asociación Hondureña Protectora de los Animales y su Ambiente (AHPRA), con más de 20 años de activismo en la defensa de los derechos animales. Diplomada en Derecho Animal de la Universidad del Museo Social Argentino y Diplomada en Derechos de los Animales por la Universidad Latina de Guerrero.
Ha recibido diversas capacitaciones sobre la materia, incluyendo la construcción de políticas públicas de protección animal. Defendió ante el Congreso Nacional la aprobación de la ley animalista de Honduras y los nuevos delitos contra el bienestar animal del Código Penal vigente. Ha capacitado a más de 5,000 servidores públicos en el tema de la Ley de Protección y Bienestar Animal y otras relacionadas. Tiene experiencia en la investigación de casos de maltrato y delitos contra el bienestar animal y la diversidad biológica. Trabajó como consultora para la organización Humane Society International LA. Actualmente se desempeña como consultora independiente en el campo del Derecho Animal.
La Asociación Hondureña Protectora de los Animales y su Ambiente (AHPRA) fue fundada en 2004 por dos abogados comprometidos e involucrados en la defensa de todos los animales. Dentro de las principales actividades de la Asociación destacan el desarrollo de campañas en las que se resalta la sintiencia animal, la difusión de la legislación animalista vigente y la asesoría legal gratuita a la ciudadanía, organizaciones y municipalidades. AHPRA ha documentado y presentado denuncias por infracciones y delitos cometidos en perjuicio de animales no humanos, logrando importantes sanciones y sentencias condenatorias en el país,
también lucha por la aprobación de nuevas normas que protejan de manera efectiva a los animales en general.
