Aanifeira celebrates with donations, children’s activities and football
A donation of two tonnes of dog and cat food will be made by Ovargado S.A. for Aanifeira’s shelter animals and 16 children from the Ovar Junior School representing Ovargado, will hand over this magnificent donation to Patricia Andrade (Aanifeira’s President) on the morning of 4th October.
During the day of October 4th, three visits will be made to local schools by the Aanifeira Management Team to present animal awareness campaigns to young children from the ages of 3 to 9 years of age and to collect donations of food for the shelter animals. The visits will be to a kindergarten, Jardim Infancia de Fornos-Guisande and the other will be to a junior school EB1/JI de Povoa de Vale both in the parish of Santa Maria da Feira.
The final visit will be to the school E8 Povoa in Paços de Brandão, Santa Maria da Feira, where the Póvoa School Parents’ Associaton (APEEPóvoa) has asked all the children to bring a donation of food and other items for the Aanifeira shelter animals. Aanifeira Management will visit the school where the children will present the result of this campaign to the shelter.
The objective of the visits is to show the children, when accompanied by an adult, on how to approach an abandoned dog, take it to the vet and the cycle that follows with the care and treatment at a veterinary clinic. Children are asked to interact with this cycle in dressing up as animals and a veterinary doctor where they can learn about the importance of vaccinations, microchipping, general health care and taking care of an animal.
This presentation is followed by a powerpoint show where they will be asked to respond to simple questions relating to animal welfare.
The Santa Maria da Feira football team, C.D. Feirense, in the 2nd Division of the Portuguese football league, is drawing special attention to animal awareness throughout the council of Santa Maria da Feira to celebrate World Animal Day. They decided to visit Aanifeira on October 2nd with their mascot of a fox for a photographic session with the cats. They will be returning on October 10th for more photo sessions with the dogs to also raise awareness for this project.
They very kindly donated 250 tickets to Aanifeira’s Management Team member, Angela Quaresma, to their next match on 26th October as a goodwill gesture. These tickets will be accessible at a special discount price for Aanifeira members the proceeds of which will go to supporting the shelter.
Aanifeira has partnered with CERCIFEIRA over the past 3 years in working with the rehabilitation and education of disabled children and adults and will be receiving a special group of disabled children and adults in the afternoon of Friday 4th October for animal awareness therapy where the participants are invited to interact with the shelter dogs with walking, playing and generally being with the dogs.
Aanifeira would like to offer their deepest thanks to all those who have contributed in making our World Animal Day 2019 so successful.

Well, what a World Animal Day 2019 for Aanifeira and for all those volunteers, staff members and of course our participants we thank you for making it so successful. Wherever we were on this day, happiness was contagious and it flowed through the shelter and to all our friends and visitors.
Inhouse visits included a group of young students from the STUDENT FORUM of a local school, together with Ovargado S.A. and IACA who came and presented the two tonnes of dog and cat food.
As well, there was an extremely enthusiastic group from Cercifeira, who together with their monitors, spent a special afternoon sharing affection with some of the Aanifeira’s puppies together with the help of Aanifeira staff members.
Visits to promote WAD outside of Aanifeira on the day included Escola EB Póvoa – Paços de Brandão where the parents’ association APEEPÓVOA rallied all the children in asking them to bring donations of food for the shelter animals. In addition, this school had a just received an educational visit from Animas – Associação Portuguesa para Intervenção com Animais de Ajuda Social, who work with animals which are eventually donated to the deaf and people with special needs. They gave a wonderful animal awareness presentation to the children with the presence of three beautiful dogs.
Presentations were made by two members of the Aanifeira Management Team to children at two schools making up part of the AGRUPAMENTO DE ESCOLAS DA CORGA DE LOBÃO in the form of a theatre where the children actively participated in what revolves around finding an abandoned animal and the follow-up care required. The Escola EB1 Póvoa-Vale with an age group from 6-9 years of age as well as the small children from the Fornos-Guisande Kindergarten helped make this day memorable for Aanifeira volunteers and we hope unforgettable for them.
They collected donations of food for the shelter dogs and cats and the Escola EB1 Póvoa-Vale presented a Certificate of Thanks to Aanifeira. Aanifeira, in turn, presented each school with a Certificate of Participation to thank them for their work for this day.
Our special thanks to one and all for their contribution in helping World Animal Day be successful!
