About 2,600 Join Fun Runs On World Animal Day
Around 2,600 people took part in the 10-km wild run and 3-km pet run at the Likas Sports Complex as part of activities commemorating World Animal Day 2015 here today.
The event, aimed at increasing awareness of animal welfare, was organised by Valiant Events and Wildlife Alliance (Borneo) Sdn Bhd with support from non-governmental organisations including Borneo Conservation Trust (BCT), Animal Lovers Independent Rescuer (ALIR), International Aid for Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) and Green Connection.
“World Animal Day provides a platform for animal lovers and advocates from various backgrounds to unite on animal issues, which is a fundamental catalyst for change,” Valiant Events spokesperson Melissa Angus said in a statement here today.
She said there was a critical need to uplift the standards of animal welfare in the state more than ever, especially after the passing of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 this year.
Through increased awareness at today’s event, Melissa said they wanted to do their part to help create a snowball effect in creating a more compassionate culture that triggered legal reforms and social movement for animal welfare in Sabah.
