Campaign for Passing of Animal Welfare Bill, Sri Lanka

WAD Ambassador Otara Gunewardene and the Otara Foundation are working with several other animal welfare charities and activists, encouraging policymakers, parliamentarians and the Sri Lankan President; to pass a long overdue Animal Welfare Bill. Animal Welfare in Sri Lanka is hampered by an archaic Animal Cruelty Ordinance which has remained largely unchanged over the last 100 years. Poor conditions in the National Zoo with Elephants who are chained all their lives, scant regulation of pet shops and backyard breeders, and almost no enforcement against perpetrators of animal abuse; are some of a few systemic issues that will be addressed via the new bill.

The new Animal Welfare Bill currently tabled in parliament will bring sweeping changes to legislation and enforcement if passed. Visit http://www.otarafoundation.com/?actnow=animalwelfarebill to sign the petition.

By the second week of November 2015, more than twenty three thousand people have already signed the petition.
