Candlelight rally on World Animal Day
Members of Navi Mumbai Animal Protection Cell (NMAPC) and residents of sectors 19 and 19A, Nerul held a candlelight rally for animal rights on Sunday.
The event was held to commemorate World Animal Day and also the death of the stray dog, Teddy, who died after being beaten brutally. Candles were lit at Teddy’s grave and a protest against the two accused in the case, Akhilesh Asthana (31) and Ram Kunjbihari (29), took place in front of Safal Complex, after which the rally moved towards D-mart and Nerul railway station. “Although an FIR was lodged, the accused were released on bail. We want a stronger case for Teddy and urge the police and NMMC to be proactive on this issue,” said activist Arati Chauhan of NMAPC. Protestors also demanded for a proper animal hospital within NMMC jurisdiction. “Through various RTI applications, we have come to know that there is a plot reserved for animal hospital but it has not been utilised,” said Mahendra Singh, a regular dog feeder. Also, the doctors and staff at the current dog sterilization centre in Turbhe, behave curtly towards visitors who want to admit animals, he added. NMMC veterinary officer, Dr Vaibhav Zunzare, assured protestors that all demands would be looked into by the civic body.
