Low Cost Spay/Neuter, Deworming Clinic
In the midst of the pandemic we have seen an increase in the poverty levels in many low income neighborhoods in Costa Rica and people’s animals have been directly affected. Many owners cannot afford to get their animals spayed/neutered or get medical attention because of their severe economic sitaution.
On September 11 we will be organizing a massive spay/neuter clinic in a poor area where people can bring their pets to be fixed as well as dewormed and treated for any other ailments. Dog and cat food will also be given out and owners who cannot afford to pay the surgery will not be charged.

On September 11th, SASY (Stop Animal Suffering -Yes!) held a low cost/no cost spay/neuter clinic in a very poor area on the outskirts of San Jose. A total of 57 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered, dewormed and some were treated for other ailments. One rescue (the photo of the Pitbull in the cage with a muzzle) had been confiscated by the police from an abusive situation where it was tied up in the elements with no shelter. It had been used for breeding and it was in poor physical condition. We were able to spay her and she went to a foster home with food and medication. There is currently an explosion in the population of cats in these neighborhoods and pet owners more than ever are bringing them in to be spayed/neutered. We are successfully educating people on the advantages of spaying/neutering and caring for their animals in the proper way and I can see a huge difference in the overpopulation problem.
No animal was turned away because their owner was unable to cover the cost and this is thanks to 3 wonderful people: Bob Ferber, Roland Shanklin and Chris DeRose. This clinic would not be possible without them. So many unwanted litters will not be born to a life of misery and neglect. I’m so grateful and happy to be part of this work to help end animal suffering for the dogs and cats of Costa Rica.
