Of claws and hooves and meadows – 12 poems for One Welfare
We are delighted to announce a FREE spoken word event ’12 Poems for One Welfare’ on World Animal Day, 4 October at 19:00 BST. The event is organised by a partnership between University College Dublin and Poetry Ireland and funded by the SFI Discover Programme. Register here!
Join poets Moya Cannon, Conor Cleary, Martin Dyar, and Roxanna Nic Liam as they read their specially commissioned poems on the theme of One Welfare, a new discipline that has emerged from growing recognition of the interconnection between the well-being of humans, animals, and the environment. They’ll be joined by scientists Siobhan Mullan, Professor of Animal Welfare and Veterinary Ethics at University College Dublin UCD; Dr Gareth Arnott, Senior Lecturer in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Queens University Belfast QUB; Laura Griffin, PhD student in the final year of her study at the Wildlife Ecology and Behaviour Laboratory UCD; and Dr Grace Carroll, Lecturer in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at School of Psychology, Animal Behaviour Centre QUB. They will provide broader reflections on animal welfare science. Together, our featured poets and scientists will delve into the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has shed new light on the relationship between human beings and the clawed and hooved creatures with whom we share the earth.
