SPANA Syria celebrates World Animal Day 2012
As in previous years, SPANA Syria is planning an exciting programme to celebrate World Animal Day on October 4th, encouraging children throughout the country to take part. SPANA Syria, which is based at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Al Baath University, has reached an agreement to promote animal welfare education for children at schools right across the country.
Celebrating World Animal Day each year has become an important annual occasion for the children in Syria. This date is now associated with a lot of popular activities, and this year is no exception. Listed below are the proposed events, all of which are aimed at developing positive attitudes towards animals and the environment:
– A workshop for children entitled: ‘We Are All Birds’. Children will be asked to create bird-masks out of junk materials.
– A drawing and modeling competition entitled: ‘The Syrian Eagle’. Children’s artistic skills will be put to the test creating the most suitable environment for this magnificent bird.
– A short concert to be held in a theatre in Damascus. A newly written piece will herald the Syrian flagship species of the year, which this year is to be the golden eagle.
– The concert will be followed by a prize-giving ceremony where competition results are announced and where prizes are given.
However the most popular activity will undoubtedly be the ‘hands-on’ experience with live animals. For several years now, SPANA has been able to provide children with the opportunity to encounter animals at first hand. A group of tame farm animals-donkeys, sheep, goats and camels-are available so the children can learn how they should be approached and handled. Having a ‘hands-on’ experience with animals is always a highlight with children, at the same time teaching them that all animals are sentient beings and should be treated with kindness and respect.
