SPCA Animal Welfare Policy Video Competition 2021-22

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of SPCA  for this year and World Animal Day (4 Oct), we will be launching the Animal Welfare Policy Video Competition for all secondary and tertiary students in Hong Kong. This competition is designed and is supported by the Education Bureau (EDB) and Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). It is an 8-month programme that runs from October until June 2022.

We would like to raise the awareness of students and the general public on current animal welfare issues and animal-related government policy through creative student involvement. Contestants are invited to contribute creative ideas to Hong Kong’s move towards an animal-friendly city by offering feasible and practical animal welfare policy suggestions to the public in 3-minute videos on a given pet or wildlife topic.

The “SPCA Animal-Welfare Policy Video Competition” for secondary and tertiary students came to a successful close with the awards ceremony held on June 25. The competition had encouraged 50 teams of secondary and tertiary students to enrol in the competition. Despite, Hong Kong’s fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic causing school closures and early holidays, 28 teams of 95 students eventually completed their tasks and sent in some imaginative videos.

We had provided five professionally run online workshops to enhance students’ understanding of the welfare shortcomings in their chosen topics (either about pets or wildlife); to explain the difficulties our inspectors encounter in wildlife rescues; to demonstrate that public policies are now outdated; and to teach filming and editing techniques.

Many teams provided practical suggestions for the protection of wildlife, especially for reducing accidents in water-catchment channels. We plan to take these ideas to the relevant authorities and hope they can be introduced to safeguard wild animals’ lives.
