The 3rd Animals Asia Poster Design Competition

In May, the 3rd Animals Asia Poster Design Competition kicked off. The theme of the competition this year is: No to cat and dog meat.

The competition is aimed at inviting those who are interested in design and agree that cats and dogs are friends not food, to show their creativity. We hope that by demonstrating their art works, we can also spread the idea to the public: the industry of cat and dog meat trade is full of crimes and lies, that cats and dogs as companion animals are not to be eaten.

We started to collect the contribution works from May, and selected awarded posters in July. Until 30th June, we received more than 400 works. 14 outstanding works were picked out by our jury at the end of July.

The first place is won by Ms Yang Mengyun, whose work is “Brightness and Fear”. Yang explained her idea: brightness is good for human. We don’t connect anything scary to brightness. But to stray animals it is not the same. Exposed under the sun or light means they can easily be spotted by dog or cat dealers, I guess they’d rather to be living in the darkness, where they can hide themselves and be far away from bad people. It is very likely that the cat and dog meat served in restaurants is from stray animals, I hope everyone can realize what they are eating.

Yang is a design-majored university student from Wuxi, Jiangsu. She has seen stray animals on her campus, and sometimes she feeds them. “I hope one day when people see stray animals, they wouldn’t think of eating or hurting them. So that the stray cats or dogs can play under the sun, relax and enjoy their free lives. ”

Mr. Nie Chonghao’s work “Companion” won the 2nd place of the competition. He explained: cats and dogs should be our friends, to loss a friend just because someone wants to eat, that is too sad. Like Yang, Nie is also a university student major in art design. He loves animals since he was small. One of the prizes of the competition is to visit the moon bear rescue centre of Animals Asia in Chengdu. He was very impressed by what he saw during the visit. “I didn’t realize that the bear bile capsules contain so much pain! In my design, the paw prints beside the footprints not only stands for companion animals like cats and dogs, but also for all the animals existed in the world. I hope animals would not die out only because human want to eat them, or kill them for ridiculous reasons. ”

Ms. Meng Xuan and Ms. Sheng Yuhan’s work have won the 3rd place. Both of their works emphasize on the aspect that companion animal is our friends, not food. Meng’s work is formed by 2 posters: an old lady who’s accompanied by a cat ,and a baby who’s accompanied by a dog. These images are from her most direct impression of cats and dogs. “Since I was small, I’ve learnt that cats and dogs are human’s friends. My granny used to have a cat, he followed my granny to wherever she went, and slept by her at night. This is what I remember the best about the cat. One day when I grow old, I wish to have a sweet friend like my granny’s cat.”

Sheng’s work is quite intriguing. From the images we can tell, that Sheng wants to deliver the message that dogs are the beloved family member, the best friend and a playful partner of their owners. Once the dogs become a dish, it would break the entire family’s hearts. Sheng wants to deliver the message that: when eating dogs, one could be eating someone’s family members.

The 14 awarded works will be printed out soon for the national tour exhibition starting in September. We are going to display them in schools, or places with dense flow of people such as shopping malls or bookshops. We hope to disseminate the idea that cats and dogs are friends not food to a wider scale, and to a further degree.
