BBBRNP is an incredible piece of primary forest encompassing over 200,000ha and supports an array of wildlife. This forest is part of what is known as the “Heart of Borneo”, Asia’s last great rainforest. This region provides vital habitat to 10 endemic species of primate, more than 350 birds, 150 reptiles and amphibians and 10,000 plant species.
But there’s a problem.
Sadly, it has been decades since the local communities in the Mentatai area of BBBRNP witnessed the last orangutan here, despite this region being prime orangutan habitat. Our partner, International Animal Rescue (IAR) in Indonesia conducted their own research and confirmed the locals observations.
Here’s what we’re doing about it:
IAR Indonesia has begun a mission to bring back orang-utan in the Mantatai region of this beautiful National Park.
At IAR’s rescue and rehabilitation centre in Ketapang West Kalimantan, five potential release candidates have been selected to start this incredible journey and second chance at freedom. Cost for each release is $5,000 AUD so we are aiming to raise at least $20,000 for four of the candidates. Hopefully we can smash this target for the fifth release.

The Brisbane events are now complete and the team would like to share some images.
The three day events included an evening fundraising event, a presentation at the “Animals in Focus” RSPCA Conference, a visit to the University, an Intimate dinner at Grown Café as well as some relaxing time, for our first time visitors to Australia.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team that made these events possible, Nancy Blessing, Leisa Woodhouse, Ellen Watson, Helen Ong, Natalie Hunter, Hannah Slowen, Sophie Cooper (and Mia), Paul Brand; and my partner Bill for always being there for me. It would not have been possible to raise these funds without the dedication of those mentioned above.
Prior to these events Leisa did her wonderful annual bake sale and raised a huge $1200.
Jenny Fritzsche and her fundraising team on the Gold Coast raised a staggering $2120 which she presented to Karmele on Friday night.
Last, but not least I would like to thank Karmele and Argitoe for sharing the three days with the team and trusting us with her Campaign. They are a lovely couple dedicated to their work and it was a pleasure to share the few days we had with them.
As you can see from the photos we all had a wonderful time and raised an overwhelming $7,494! Our aim was to raise enough funds to set one orangutan free, which we have surpassed!
Orangutan Veterinary Aid (OVAID) also had a small merchandise table at one of the events and raised a further $130, which will go towards the continuing work of IAR with supplying necessary medical equipment. www.ovaid.org
