Event Description

The Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (S.P.A.R.E.), led by its founder Amina Abaza, has managed to accomplish amazing progress in its ongoing fight to protect the country’s animals.

After a great deal of perseverance (phone calls, petitions, meetings), Amina Abaza met with Dar El Efta, and finally obtained a Fatwa (see image) approving and authorizing euthanasia for stray animals instead of the brutal, barbaric killing of stray animals by shooting or poisoning. Euthanasia was a tabou subject and is still considered as so. Dar El Efta is a branch of El Azhar, which is the highest Islamic authority in the world – the equivalent of the Vatican for Muslims.

In 2014 Amina Abaza went to the Parliament and successfully convinced the commitee responsible for drawing up Egypt’s new constitution that a clause concerning animal welfare should be included – it’s clause #45. Throughout 2015, we have seeked to address the religious issues surrounding animals. We are planning to make changes (morally, legally, religiously) on a large scale that will influence the treatment of animals in Egypt. S.P.A.R.E. also launched a petition asking animal lovers to help save Egypt’s stray dogs from a long and painful death by calling on the authorities to stop shooting and using poison (strychnine) to kill them.

In a country where the authorities and individuals will continue to kill stray animals, humane euthanasia is better than a long, agonising death. A peaceful, humane death is the very least any animal deserves. S.P.A.R.E is now concentrating all its efforts upon improving animal welfare standards in Egypt.

These are massive steps forward for Egypt’s animals. Happy World Animal Day. Amina Tharwat Abaza S.P.A.R.E Founder and President. Egyptian Ambassador for World Animal Day. aminaspare@gmail.com amina@sparelives.org www.sparelives.org
