Event Description

World Animal Day Event Report Panama is leading the frontier in the fight against no more homeless animals throughout Central and South America. Spaying and neutering is the only way to reassure a happy and healthy life for our companion animals. Without these life-saving services, dogs and cats will die a likely death of being hit by a car, starvation, or another leading cause, TVT (transmissible venereal tumor). Spay Panama is happy to announce that through your donation and our sponsors', we were able to sterilize 1,236 animals for World Animal Day in the Azuero Peninsula area. The lives of many animals and the their guardians have been improved, thanks to hard work and dedication from our volunteers and veterinarians! Further related information Thanks to the sponsorship of SPCAI, over 3,000 animals have been sterilized in Panama for World Animal Day. This means that more than 1,500,000 unwanted births have been avoided in the last three years. The goal for World Animal Day 2014 is to spay/neuter 1,500 animals and the area chosen is Peninsula de Azuero, covering the communities of Chitre, Parita, Villa de los Santos and Las Tablas. Spay/Panama has sterilized 1,394 animals in Chitre and Las Tablas. Chitre is the capital of the Panamanian province of Herrera. Chitre is located about 7 km inland from the Gulf of Panama on the Azuero Peninsula. The name Chitre comes from the native tribe Chitra. In the city, there is a district, also called Chitre, which is subdivided into five corregimientos. The corregimientos are San Juan Bautista, Llano Bonito, Monagrillo, La Arena and Chitré. Monagrillo has the unfortunate distinction of being the area with the highest incidence of cancer in the world. At the Casa de la Cultura in Monagrillo, Spay/Panama has sterilized 1,029 animals. Parita is a town in the Herreraprovince of Panama. It was founded in 1556 and it was a striving port during colonial times. Spay/Panama has not operated here and the overpopulation of dogs is extremely high. La Villa de los Santos is the capital city of the Los Santos District of Los Santos Province in Panama. Founded as Santa Cruz in 1555 by Juan Rodriguez Monjaraz, the then governor of the region, the city is known for its efforts in the movement to separate Panama from Spanish power in November 1821. A yearly festival is hosted to celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of Panama's war for independence, which started in La Villa de los Santos. Spay/Panama has not operated in this community. Las Tablas is the capital of the Panamanian province of Los Santos. It is located a few kilometers inland from the Gulf of Panama on the Azuero Peninsula. Las Tablas is a recognized national center of Panamanian folk art, music, gastronomy, architecture, culture and literature. Spay/Panama has operated 365 animals in Las Tablas.
