Animal Abuse Action Against Birkash Camel Market

This year S.P.A.R.E. honoured World Animal Day by taking strong action against the Birkash Camel Market. We hired a lawyer to sue the market outside Cairo, which is well known for abusing the camels. Men and children were regularly seen beating screaming camels with sticks. Many of the animals’ faces were bloody, and many foamed at the mouth.

Led by Amina Abaza, founder of S.P.A.R.E. we filed a very strong case against the abusers involving the Ministry of Tourism and Agriculture.

The pictures we took were so horrible which resulted in our campaign attracting massive media attention across all platforms. The images shocked the country and led to almost all TV channels airing programmes and showing videos about the inhumane treatment of animals at the Berkash Camel Market.

After sending the case to the Prosecutor General, the lawyer resigned from the case as she received threats from the butchers and traders of Birkash. This situation ensured that the Berkash case became known throughout Egypt and Amina and her team are working very hard to ensure it remains high profile.  The media coverage was in itself a victory for the case.
