Event Description

World Animal Day on October 4 was celebrated in Cameroon in the classroom this year.

Due to the political upheaval in Cameroon public events are prohibited. Again, because of the political crisis, schools are closed in the English speaking regions of Cameroon.

FAWCAM organized classes for students aged between 7 and 15 in a village hall in BUI DIVISION which is also where we run a Donkey Welfare Project.

Our programme included two lessons each lasting approximately one hour.

The first lesson taught students about the significance of World Animal Day and why it's necessary to celebrate this special day in Cameroon and other countries around the globe.

The second lesson taught the students to take proper care of their companion animals. Great emphasis was put upon being a responsible carer of animals and to show them compassion. We took several animals to the class to help with the practical aspects of the lessons including donkeys, sheep, pigs, chickens and goats.

Post-Event Summary

Upon completion of the two lessons covering the celebration of World Animal Day and responsible pet ownership, the students were able to:
  • Recognize the importance of celebrating World Animal Day in Cameroon and about the movement's mission
  • Understand the basic needs of animals and how to care for them
  • Recognize the common diseases affecting animals and how to prevent them

There's no doubt that our programme helped the students develop a sense of responsibility and compassion towards animals.
