
Malawi Celebrates World Animal Day in Lilongwe and Blantyre
The Lilongwe SPCA, in conjunction with the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (Ministry of Agriculture), Department of National Parks and Wildlife and various other stakeholders that included the Farmers Union of Malawi, Heifer International, Small Scale Livestock Project, Civil Society Agriculture Network organised a march from the Town Hall to the Civil Club stadium.
The Mayor of Lilongwe City was the Chief Walker. Banners and placards with animal welfare messages were hoisted to send a message to the public and the entire nation at large.
At the stadium, speeches were made by the dignitaries including the Minister of Agriculture, the Mayor, Members of Parliament and the Directors of Animal Health and National Parks and Wildlife. A number of stalls will be erected to allow partners in animal health to set up displays to showcase their work and how they contribute to the alleviating poor animal welfare. In addition to this we had a drama group that gave a very strong message through a drama.
We also had a local ragea star Sally Nyundo give an inspiration speech to the youths, where he said that, “we share the world with the animals and humans have no right to mistreat animal because they matter”
In addition to this, various press releases were made on radio and TV and in print media by the various partners about the World Animal Day.
We have also arranged a news feature after to World Animal Day to raise awareness and a special roundup of World Animal Day activities will be included as a pull-out in the newspaper.
We also have a panel discussion on TV and radio to raise public awareness of animal welfare issues. This was presided over by Malawi’s World Animal Day Ambassador Dr Richard Ssuna, a Proffessor for Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and a representation of the Director of Veterinary Services.
As part of the celebrations we also had an Elephant March in Lilongwe on the 3rd October that resulted in a presentation of a petition to the Minister of Tourism on the plight of Elephnts and Rhinos globally. Another campaign was help in Blantyre the second largest City in Malawi by the Blantyre SPCA.
Finally as part of the day, the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals will run a community flea medication clinic in Lilongwe.
