World Animal Day Competition
SPANA is running art and story writing contests for children aged from 5 to 18 in order to celebrate World Animal Day. World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Activities take place around the world on October the 4th every year in order to celebrate the ways in which animals enrich our lives.
The competitions are:
KS1 (5-7 years old): Design a poster with the title ‘Animals have feelings too’. Entries should be completed on an A4 piece of paper. They can be any media, including a graphic design one completed on a computer.
KS2 (8-11 years old): Design a poster with the title ‘Why animals are important’. Entries should be completed on an A4 piece of paper. They can be any media, including a graphic design one completed on a computer.
KS3/4 (12-18 years old): We would like you to write a short story with the title ‘How the donkey saved my family’. The short story, of no more than 500 words, should be set in one of the countries that we work in. You can check the website for a list.
The winning artwork will be turned in to a poster that will be used to brighten up the classrooms that we work in. The lucky story that gets picked will be transformed and translated in to a book for children to enjoy across our countries.
If you are a teacher, school or group looking to take part then we have a flyer for you to put up so the children know about the competition. There are also resources ideal for kick starting the competition in an assembly; we have a PowerPoint to help explain what the children will need to do. Individual children that are interested are also welcome to take part. Schools and groups should decide on one winner for KS1 plus a runner up, two winners from KS2 plus two runners up and three winning stories and three runners up from KS3/4.
Now for the all important details! If you would like to take part in the competitions then we need to have received your entry by Friday the 8th of November. You can send your entry in lots of different ways; by email to education@spana.org, you can take a picture of your artwork and tag us in it on Facebook or Twitter or you can send your entry to us here at London; SPANA Education, SPANA, 14 John Street, London, WC1N 2EB. If you are sending your entry by post or email please remember to include your name and either your address or the address of your school. Those who enter by Facebook or Twitter check your messages or inbox to see if you have won! Winners will be notified by Friday the 22nd November. Winning entries will also appear here on our website.
