World Animal Day isn’t just a hashtag!

World Animal Day takes place on October 4 every year and is recognised by millions of people around the globe.

In 2021, it reached over 100 million people online!

But World Animal Day isn’t just a hashtag – it’s your chance to do something productive and worthwhile for animals in need. Whoever you are, wherever you live and whatever you do, we invite you to get involved!

When you add an event to the website, we’ll offer you a FREE dog bandana and flag!*

(*Add your event early, so that you receive them in time for October 4!)

Who can take part?

World Animal Day is for everyone!

  • You can do something on your own or get a group of friends together – the possibilities are endless!
  • If you’re an animal welfare organisation or volunteer, you could use the day to raise awareness of your work or recruit new helpers. If you’re a shelter or sanctuary, why not hold an Open Day like Remus Horse Sanctuary are doing – or simply dedicate one of your regular events to World Animal Day? RSCPA Cornwall will hold a Rescue Reunion Party this year – what a fantastic idea! In case you’re stuck though, we’ve put together some suggestions for you.
  • Are you a supporter of an animal welfare charity? This is your chance to help them and let others know about their work too! Last year, Aliz crocheted 30 pairs of hedgehogs to raise funds for Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital!
  • If you’re a business, motivate your employees to do something meaningful for animals! EasyStorage took part in 2021 – read their tips and check out our list of ideas for workplaces.

  • We encourage veterinary practices to involve their local communities in World Animal Day – being on the front line of animal welfare, they have an important role to play. In the UK, Severn Veterinary Centre have already added a cake sale and donation drive!
  • Children are the future for animals, so we love it when educators and youth groups add events to the website. Little Learners in Australia have planned a range of activities for their children, but we also have other ideas to browse. If you’d like to fundraise for IAPWA (International Aid for Protection & Welfare of Animals), they’ve shared an educational pack for schools in the UK and Asia, where two of their projects are located.
  • Universities and colleges regularly support their favourite charities throughout the year. Running a World Animal Day event would be a good way for students to develop their organisational and leadership skills. From sharing knowledge to planning an activity for friends, we’ve compiled some suggestions.
  • If you work or live in a retirement home, we hope you’ll take part on October 4 too! Let us know if you have your own ideas to add to our list.
  • Runners, athletes, gyms and sports clubs are in an ideal position to arrange an event, perhaps a challenge, a race or fundraising activity – it’s time to get creative!

Your event

  • Events don’t have to be huge: As Vincent Van Gogh said, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” World Animal Day is an opportunity for animal lovers around the world to unite and speak up for animals, under the same umbrella.
  • Your activity doesn’t have to be on October 4: World Animal Day falls on a Tuesday this year, but your event can take place up to around two weeks either side of October 4 – just make the date clear in your advertising.
  • Your event can be global: During the pandemic, we were impressed with the number of people who still participated in World Animal Day despite lockdown – many activities were just held online instead. So, if you would like to invite the whole world, go ahead!
  • Need more inspiration? Take a look at other events or visit our get involved pages.
  • You’ll need to sign up first: Register as a website user before you add your event – it only takes two minutes! When you add your event, you’ll need a main photo (maximum 5MB). You can add extra images, or even a video, if you want to!
  • Supporting other events: Attending activities organised by others is just as important as creating your own. See if there’s an event near you!

#WorldAnimalDay is also a hashtag!

If you’re unable to organise an event for October 4, please still share the hashtag on World Animal Day this year… and start planning ahead for 2023! Sign up for email updates.
