A Warm Welcome for Stray Cats in Bosnia & Herzegovina: WagWag Opens Their Third Cat Hotel

Just a couple of months after being announced as one of the 2025 winners of the World Animal Day grant, WagWag from Bosnia & Herzegovina has proudly completed their Hotel for Cats!

Whilst the exact numbers of strays in Bosnia are not known, abandoned cats are a widespread welfare issue across the country. Winters here are harsh, often dropping below freezing, which leaves stray cats at risk of illness, frostbite, and dehydration from frozen water sources.

The new Hotel for Cats offers vulnerable cats shelter and safety in the form of a secure enclosure fitted with several individual “bedrooms” where up to 30 cats can hide and sleep. Volunteers visit regularly to keep the space clean, provide food and water, and ensure the cats are comfortable.

Information panels outside the hotel explain its purpose, raising awareness about the plight of stray cats and encouraging passers-by to consider adoption.

And the results came quickly! The video below shows the first 12 hours after opening, when 15 cats visited the hotel. We’re delighted to share that the adorable orange kitten shown at 0:29 was adopted straight away.

This is not WagWag’s first success: it is actually their third Hotel for Cats, and they hope to inspire other cities to follow suit. This model has the potential to be used by many as it is affordable, practical, and lifesaving, and could transform how communities support stray cats during the toughest months of the year.

We are delighted to have supported such a practical and meaningful project – one that will give countless cats a safer and warmer winter.
