Lake Chapala World Animal Day 2016 celebration

At Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, the Alianza por una Educación Humanitaria – Humane Education Alliance (APEH) is organizing a community event for children to celebrate World Animal Day 2016.

Location: Sailcloth (La Vela) on the Malecon in Chapala, Jalisco

 Date: Sunday, October 2

Time: 11.30 – 14.30

There will be fun activities, storytelling, reading out the rights of animals, puppeteers, workshops, and demonstrations by local dog trainers on how to properly care for pets and how to teach them basic commands. Volunteers will be handing out cleaned up used collars and leashes to children who have a dog. APEH has been collecting these items by placing donation boxes at local vets and grooming salons. The goal of the event is to promote awareness about how to live with and behave responsibly towards animals, the environment, and each other. By employing these activities to instill fundamental human values such as respect, non-violence, justice and personal responsibility, children, especially those who come from challenging environments, learn empathy-building skills, self-esteem, and how to utilize their instinctive love for animals.

APEH is dedicated to developing and delivering anti-violence and anti-bullying programs that educate children in the care, protection and responsibility to all species.

Teaching responsible animal ownership, helping minimize the problem of domestic-animal overpopulation, neglect and cruelty, and helping the community understand the responsibilities associated with having animals are also part of Humane Education.

APEH was founded in 2011 and operates under the umbrella of the non-profit organizations Lakeside Friends of the Animals, La Tienda de la Ciencia (The Science Tent), and Mariposa Project/ Butterflies En Mexico. Their collective efforts resulted in a highly successful “Guardians of the Planet” curriculum, a pilot program, approved by the Jalisco Education Department in 2013 and subsequently implemented in 48 schools in the Lakeside area.
